Jun. 19th, 2003 12:09 pmSo many things happened last night and today.
So, a while ago we lost home DSL. Then we got it back, but I didn't, because my dad & I got into a tiff and he said I could only have it if I could pay for half of it. ANd I couldn't.
So last night, 2 months later, I'm using his laptop and saving stuff on disk but the disk lost all my saved research material for a huge project (and finales next week) and was giving me a headache looking at the screen and other stuff too. I got so upset that I turned it all off and told him I'd try again later. He felt really sorry for me, so he gave me DSL back, for a while. And he wanted to cheer me up, so he showed me that he'd bought me The Animatrix, because he thought I'd been such a cool person lately. I was really touched (being super-emotional last night.)
I watched some of it this morning, and after I do this journal entry I'm going to go watch more. There's nine short stories.
Final Flight of the Osiris was awesome and sexy and sad.
The Second Renaissance Parts I & II were fantastic and sad.
Kid's Story was interesting, and both beautiful and ugly at the same time. A very energetic animation style.
So far, these stories capture much more of the tragedy of war than The Matrix. Death is a big theme... but so is wonder and perseverence. I haven't seen Reloaded yet, but I now have to soon.
The animation, in its varying styles, is fucking unbelievably cool.
I also watched the Extra segment about the history of Anime. It was mostly stuff I'd already known, being the true otaku that am, but a few stuff that I didn't, especially the detail about Astroboy.
This whole DVD is saying in plain speech, outright and in your face, what I've known from the first time I watched The Matrix: it's such an anime put to live action. The directoral style, the editing, the visual imagery and music and mise en scene of the film... it's live action anime made by anime/scifi fans.
EDIT: I finished watching Program. That's my favorite. Definitely.
