I believe he won, which meant he couldn't return to the staff.
I can hear "Election Night" running in the next room while I'm (supposed to be) working on my Angel BoD piece. This episode has one of my favorite moments at the end. It's when Bartlett has won and Abby is speaking to him before they go on stage to accept the plaudits of his supporters. She notices he had a slight episode that day and points out those days are going to be more frequent and he's going to have to learn to cope, but that they'll get through it together. The song they're playing in the background is "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and it's a wonderful choice because it's not actually about the election or Bartlett's platform, but about what's happening to him.
TWW is one of those series where I can find singular moments I'd just like to bottle, they're so good.
