Oh, and the same question for the flip side, for a conservative taking a bullet for a bleeding-heart liberal President.

I'm going with the assumption that the President (or other high political person being protected) wouldn't have to worry about this, because the selection process would ensure that anyone who was on his team had no doubts about doing their job. It's not a question that the protectee should have to ponder-- the question is whether the bodyguard would take the job in the first place or not, because of how much personal politics matter to you, verusus how much the prestige of the job matters.
