Alien Cult Cats
Dec. 24th, 2003 01:46 pmOver lunch I read an article in the SJ Mercury News Entertainment section about the stage show Cats. Why? Because there were big colorful pictures, and also I have fond memories of watching it myself. I think I was ten or eleven or so.
I was reading a part where they mentioned how the faded glamour cat went up to heaven at the end. It rememinded me of the first time I was told the ending, two years ago. It clashed with how I recalled the end to be. I thought "Well, I could see how you might interpret it that way, but I remember..."
... the old cat being taken away in a spaceship that the cats all worshipped. Like a cult thing, like the people who stood at the top of the building in Independence Day.
I also remember thinking it was weird that cats should be in an alien-worshipping cult like the crazy people on The X Files, but then again I wasn't a cat and didn't own a cat or know anything about cats, so if the play said that cats worshiped spaceships (in exactly the same way that the alien toys in Toy Story worshipped the Claw, if you want an idea of what I'm talking about), that was fine with me for the play. And after all, didn't a space ship come and beam her up when she got too old? Obviously the worshipping was working out fine and the aliens were doing their part.
Two years ago, when I learned that all of this was, in fact, something totally different and there were no aliens, I was rather disappointed. Now I think about the whole thing with a mild feeling of nostalgia. My ending was better.
