For general HTML help, I recommend Lissa Explains It All (http://www.lissaexplains.com/). Don't be scared off by the fact that it claims to be for kids ... it contains tons of really useful introductory info.
As for spaces blending into one, you can use the non-breaking space. A number of those together don't revert to only one. To get a non-breaking space, you just need to go to wherever you would normally hit the space bar, then type an ampersand (&), immediately followed by "nbsp;" (without the quotes). You can type as many non-breaking spaces together as you like.
