Full Metal Alchemist # 1-15 reaction
May. 31st, 2004 12:52 pmWhile at the con, I spent the hours from 12:00am this morning to 6:20ish this morning watching a marathon of Full Metal Alchemist, which I had never seen before. To sum up:
OhmygodIlovethisshow!
I need more episodes. Like, now. This show has Teh Angst. In fact it has so much angst it seems like it could be angst overload to the point of ridiculousness, but then I think about it and it's not ridiculous at all... it's just very very angst-inducing. And it should be.
Intense is the word for this anime.
Other than the angst, it's surprisingly funny.
It reminds me of Trigun a lot, that way.
jaina, you would love this show. It's something in the mixture of comedy and funny characters with intense drama and Bad Things happening just beneath the surface...and a sense of urgency. It's that mood and atmosphere of the show that reminds me so much of Trigun. Also, the setting is rather Trigunish at times, with small towns and desert occasionally, and everything being English names and English writing.
The plot and characters, however, are not like Trigun.
My favorite cahracter? I can't. I have too many.
Edward Elric, who hates being called short and has super angst.
Al Elric, who has super angst too buy never seems to brood in it like Ed, even though he has much more right to.
Colonel Roy Mustang, (::snickers over his name yet again::), who is manipulative, ambitious in an absolutely insane way, funny as hell, has a dash of what might or might not be great nobility of purpose, and just as much whopping angst as the Elric brothers.
I want to huggle every person in this show and tell them not to be sad. But they don't need it, because they handle their angst pretty well. Which is also refreshing.
I love ALL the military people, especially that intelligence guy who obsessively shows off pictures of his super-adorable 3 year old little girl to every person he talks to.
Even the villain guy, while not being someone I want to huggle particularly, is damn cool. He's like a Terminator, only human. He just keeps coming and coming and never stops.
What really interests me about this series, though, is how dramatically it yo-yos from humor to intense tragedy, and the way it wades into the gray between the black & white, far more than Trigun was willing too. This show is willing to get its hands dirty, and at some point everyone is in a bad way.
And now we go to spoilers and much hyperventilating on my part:
OH MY GOD, NINA!!!
::traumatized::
I can't believe they did that. Evil, evil EVIL show! A four year old little girl.... ::cries:: Dammit I hate it when evil things are done to children!
And after all that build up to like her... I didn't see it coming. I was Jossed in an anime.
Speaking of build up, this show does continuity really well. It's so detailed that way, and everything comes together and they throw all this information at you and its all you can do to absorb it and try to find a medium between laughing and crying.
My brain is totally whacked from this series, and I'm only up to ep 15.
I love the connections to the war... from Colonel Mustang to Dr. Marco to the current villain "Scar" to the dead doctor parents of the neighbors in the Elric brothers' home town. It's all so... twisted together in a warped circle of misery and regret. And episode 15 fried my brain. After no sleep at 6 am, watching this completely fried my brain. I can't even talk about it in detail.
In summary, I need new episodes. Like, now. And then I need fanfic. And then I need to write fanfic.
At the moment though... where is my Naruto #85? I need to download that...
