When I make an icon and offer it for public use, I always request credit, because I admit I get annoyed sometimes when I see someone using one of my icons without credit, so asking for credit heads most of that off at the pass. Also, I always save borrowed icons to my harddrive with a filename incorporating the maker's LJ username (spikeicon_rashaka.jpg or something) so I can remember who made them, and I always credit icons with the makers' usernames in my userpic-keywords (with the usernames in parentheses, because it's more aesthetically pleasing--any icon in my userpics without a parenthetical name is one I made). I do this because my Inner English Major screams out at me when I don't. I hafta document EVERYTHING. ;P To me, if I don't credit an icon, it's like I'm writing an English paper and quoting a paragraph in its entirety from one of my sources, and then saying "Wow, isn't this an awesome paragraph? I didn't write it, but it's so awesome I had to use it. Don't ask me where I found it, though, 'cause I have no clue!" It's not really plagiarism, per se, because I'm not claiming that I wrote that paragraph, but it'll still get my ass bitchslapped up and down Main Street by any English professor who's half-awake.
