I am distracting myself from Buffy thoughts by other tv thoughts instead.

I overheard someone talking about Babylon 5, and it made me grin a bit, because I liked that show so much when it was on.

It only ran for five seasons, but it was better--I thought-- than all of the Star Trek shows to date. Why? Well, because it wasn't an explorer show. It had the aliens and the weirdness, but it was about politics. It was about wars that changed the galaxy, not exploring the galaxy and pausing every once and a while for a war.

The concept of Babylon 5 was similar to the concept of Star Trek : Deep Space 9, only DS9 never pulled it off quite as well. It didn't seem as realistic, probably because it was trapped in the Star Trek universe.

I dunno why, but Babylon 5 always seem more interesting. Take Lando (sp?)-- he was an incredibly complex character... he could be a conniving bastard, but he was a patriot to his people too. At varying points in the series he was a spy, a diplomat, an assassin (or something close), a hero, an emperor... he was fun to hate, fun to like, and fun to watch. And the intereaction between him and that one other alien leader of the Narns (god his name's flying right out my ears at this moment) was great as well... sometimes they hated each other, and sometimes they were almost friends.

And Babylon 5 had *The Shadows* as their enemies. The Shadows were cool.... scary-looking spidery aliens that no one could see, who also had this weird little alien thing that latched onto your neck and controlled your every move (unless you were like Lando in the future flash, and realized if got drunk enough it slept).

The show was big on conspiracies, big on intricate plots. I liked the Telepaths. And I loved how the big battle in the end of the show was the take-over of Earth. Ironic, really, because this was a space show where taking over Earth was a GOOD thing.

Anyway, that's enough fan blabbing. I think I might buy the DVDs as a box set at some (far far) later date.
