::rewatches episode 50 of Full Metal Alchemist::

Ok, I am much calmer now. In fact, instead of getting me more upset, watching it a second time has actually left me feeling more reasonable about recent events.

Also, it's reinforced my deep and profound respect for this series. God, the amount of plot development they fit into 21 minutes of running time! It's pretty amazing. Sometimes it feels like an hour-long drama because so much *happens* in every episode.

A few small spoiler notes: (stay away all unspoiled folks!)

So now we know Roy doesn't believe in God either. I think this is the first time that's been mentioned, though we've known about Ed's atheism since episode 1 or 2.

For a moment I think Pride kind of had a point about the alchemists being devils... using souls that crossover to perform magic tricks is pretty awful. Then again they don't realize that's what's happening most of the time since the power comes from inside the alchemist (I guess they're just more in touch with their inner gate than people who can't perform alchemy), and anyway I don't think Pride meant it that way. I think he was just showing more of the anger that all Homunculous seem to have toward alchemists. Probably resenment for their creation.

My brain keeps going back to the idea that Al is going to sacrifice his own body to bring Ed back to life. Which makes me horribly nervous because on the other hand I've long thought that a possible ending would be that Edward dies but Al gets his body back. Either way is horrible-- I WANT THEM BOTH TO LIVE!

Another thought about the gate: I still think Izumi is right and the gate leads to Hell. I mean, it's designed directly from August Rodin's sculpture of the Gates to Hell. And I bet the black creatures on the inside, that become Homunculous, are demons or devils or some kind of Hellish spirit. We know they're not souls. So Al's body is trapped temporarily in Hell, whereas Honenheim and Edward eventually pushed their bodies and souls all the way through-- Ed back to his world, Honenheim to the past of our world. So when we die the energy or power of our spirits/souls goes through the gate into the Hell within the gate, and then the alchemists in the alternative universe draw on that energy and pull it from the gate. Most of them do it unconsciously and only a few actually ever see the gate itself.

ETA: I just want everyone on my flist (::cough[livejournal.com profile] girlwithjournalcough::) to know that despite how I bitch, I really love this show.

Really, I do. I respect any series that can make its audience its bitch, any show that is ambitious and not afraid to go for your gut with a sucker-punch while wrapping it's silky soft hands around your heart. I think it's quite possible I might never watch another anime series this good.

What I wouldn't give for this to be made into a live-action series on HBO where there are no ratings limit and they love controversial stuff. Cause there's a lot of controversial stuff in this show. Episode 1...and 3... and 7... and 8... okay maybe more than a lot. Maybe a friggin' huge amount.

Then again I love it as an animated series so maybe live-action wouldn't be any good at all.

Ah hell. The truth is that I'm one week from the series finale and I don't want this show to end yet. I'm not ready to let go.
