I watched Farscape this morning from 10:30-11:20... sadly neither episode was "Crackers Don't Matter". ::pout:: But I did end up explaining the show to one of my housemates... unfortunately I don't think I hooked her.

Farscape is so wonderful, but... but it's so hard to explain. And I always feel vaguely on the defensive when I explain it, even if my audience/convertee is patient and open-minded.

::sigh:: I love this show though. And the miniseries is in two weeks!

I am so seriously hyped about that.

I was just conned into attending Andromeda Tuesdays by dragonstarlin, and she mentioned that Farscape is one of the best series ever. I have no idea what it's about, but I'm curious why it seems to be creeping about all over my flist as of late. What's the deal with this series?

It's creeping up because the miniseries finale we've been waiting over a year and a half for is happening in less than two weeks.

What's the deal with this series? Well, as elz said:

1) The characters are all certifiable. As are the writers.
2) Anything that can explode, will explode.
3) Lizardy-looking guys in black leather are not to be trusted.
4) Nobody has margaritas with pizza.


Seriously, though this show is not just about the funny. It's got crazy drama. I think anyone that liked Buffy or Angel would find this show also very likeable-- strongly acted, very smartly written, with the main focus being on the characters and character relationships set over an action/adventure plot.

Basically it starts as a fish-out-of-water series: John Crichton, astronaut, accidentally discovers how to make a wormhole and in the accident gets thrown to the other side of the galaxy. Immediately he's captured by Peacekeepers (they're like Space Nazis), escapes aboard a prison transport ship that he and the other prisoners (there's only 4 others) take over and run off with, bringing with them a Peacekeeper commando shoot-things-first woman named Aeryn that they had trapped during the escape, who is then branded a traitor too. Now you have John, the real fish out of water, on a ship trying to hide with a bunch of other fugitives, and none of them know each other or get along very well. And they're all wanted by the Peacekeeper government. Then they go about adventuring while trying to flee and keep their heads. That's the basis of the show.

It's very very smartly done-- and intense continuity. Anyone can jump in any time and figure it out if its explained, but if you watch it all the way through there's high rewards in terms of foreshadowing and character arcs and themes. Things that happen in season 1 and 2 have serious ramifications in seasons 3 or 4... John is like the rock that has a million ripples in the pond. As more people learn who he is (he's always being mistaken for a Sebacean, the very human-like species that make up the PeaceKeepers) and how he got there, more different races and groups become interested in the wormhole technology John accidentally discovered.

This show will make you laugh and cry many times. It's just below Buffy and above The X Files in terms of my fandom love.
