Emma
Watched episodes 8 - 10. I was spoiled for the big event of episode 8, but it still hurt. Episode 9 was very good, but to be honest I don't remember what happened in it because the three episodes have molded together as one in my mind. The events all blur.
But episode 10! That was... wow. Just wow. The characters are so subtle and controlled and Victorian that when there's an emotional outburst... it's like Christmas morning or something for the audience. Instant squeals of of squee and OMG!OMG!s, along with happy/frantic wringing of hands and talking to the monitor.
Go William! Go! You can do it! Be strong! Go!!!
I need, like, fanfic.
He slapped him! OMG!
The middle brother covering the younger brothers eyes was probably my favorite thing of the entire episode. Of course I loved the hugging and the admonitions of love, but the that little thing with the baby brother was just AWESOME. And so typical for this show's subdued style of comic relief.
His father! He offered her money to stay away from William. That bastard. Poor Emma-- I'm glad she left right away rather than continue after THAT, but I'm so heartbroken for her too. What an offensive and deeply hurtful thing to be told.
The shot near the end of William smoking a cigar quietly to himself kills me. And oddly reminded me of his father. In fact, every time William looks serious and pensive it makes him look more like his dad.
I'm really curious as to what William plans to do. I think he should just elope with Emma, and cut his father's blessing out of the picture entirely. Then his father would be forced to adjust. And judging by what we've seen of his family, I don't think the father would banish or disown William for it. He doesn't seem that heartless or evil. Just stubborn and prejudiced.
I can see how William is reluctant to risk cutting his family off, but it's not like there's as big an obligation to the estate as his father maintains there to be. There's several other children to take over after the father, two of them boys, the older of which isn't that much younger than William anyway. And even if he was cut off by his family, it's not like they'd be starving in the streets. Emma was probably left a modest amount by her mistress, enough to live off until she finds new work, and William would still have an enormous benefactor in Prince Hakim. Hakim would certainly be able to help the new couple start a business or some other means of livelihood.
Speaking of Hakim, I loved him in these episodes. Loved and hated. I was mad that he spilled the beans about Emma... but in a way I kinda love him for that too, the manipulative bastard, because he probably thought he was helping his friend by forcing the situation, forcing William to take responsibility. I loved that he tried to talk Emma out of leaving.
I was rooting for William and Emma to embrace when they saw each other outside like that. And they did! And then I was cheering when he stepped between Emma and his father. Although, what did he expect his father would do, strike her? Still, it was sweet. I was also cheering for him to run after her, although I'm not sure why he gave up so easily.
Lost
There's something seriously messed up about the fact that I squeed more over this promo ad than I did the entire first season of Lost. They should have the PR people who designed this ad write the show. It would be such an improvement!
But then again I think almost everything can be improved by being just a little more arty.
Also? I want to lick Jin's jawline in that one screencap.
