No one in the series calls it the "gate of alchemy". They call it The Gate for lack of any other idea what to call it. It's designed after Rodin's sculpture of the Gates of Hell, and Izumi says she believes that it is the Gate to/of Hell. Which fits nicely with the themes of religion v. science sprinkled throughout FMA.
