Spuffy fantasy fiction is evil.

I don't know why I get sucked in reading it. Most of it is terrible, and the best ones are only alright, or half-decent.

Even the ones with better writing style often have terrible plots.

It's horribly mushy. 9.5 tines our of 10 Spike is dramatically out of character. The saccahrine levels are so high I feel I need an insulin shot after reading it. And always, always, Spike is portrayed as the perfect boyfriend material who is drastically unnapreciated by Buffy (who is either dating Riley or Angel at the time) until she comes to her senses and a) jumps him, or b) asks him to the prom.

Ick.

And yet, I still read some of them.

Though, to be fair, Zarrah's new fic Blast from the Past does have good, hot smut. And it's not set in High School, which helps.

I saw this ALL the time in (stereo)typical Gabrielle/Joxer fic, though, so these sort of little gems aren't confined to Spuffyfic. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. (I KNOW I wrote my share of G/J fic like that, and don't think I don't writhe in shame.) I think it often happens with shipper-fans of an Unrequited Love pairing--shippers often "side with" the character who's doing the Loving, "against" the character who's doing the Unrequiting. (This is a mixed bag--sometimes the Unrequiting character really is getting a bad rap; sometimes s/he really is being a bitch. ;)

But yes, anyway, evil evil evil. Go read the dictionary instead. (But first give me links so I can read the evil evil evil fic. I've already read the dictionary.)

Well, it's not set in high school, but it does have all the other classic symptoms:
Mound
Channel
Center
I think there might have been shafts involved
The Billy Idol thing was, well....
Everyone's human
Spike's a stripper.
It's ten years after high school
Was Buffy even a Slayer at all?
I had to quit before i found out what on earth she'd done with Giles.

yeah.... I'm reading it for the smut, and sort of skimming the rest, and I only get to reading it at very late fanfic-hours of the night anyway. I wasn't much into the stripper thing (I actually skipped that whole part), but I dunno... I just keep reading it.

there's a link above. It is evil. and I read it.

because I'm into pain like that, and I just can't help but read ANYTHING that has the words "Buffy", "Spike", and "romance" in them. Its a sick, evil, obsession.

Spuffy fantasy fiction is evil.

Actually, a lot of Spuffy fiction in general is evil. When I used to frequent ff.net, I found a whole lot of crap. And smut written by preteens. And terrible characterizations (namely: Spike = fluffy puppy, Buffy = helpless to his sex appeal). Sometimes I too get sucked into them. It's horrible, I know. I need a badfic filter for my computer. *g*

Thanks. Thanks a lot. I'm reading this now and I. can't. stop. It's not even like a train wreck that you can't turn away from. It's more like a piece of gristle that's caught in your teeth that's irritating the shit of you. But instead of getting up off your lazy ass and getting a toothpick or some floss, you keep messing with it with your tongue hoping to get it out. And then you finally do manage to get it out with your tongue after all and you end up swallowing a nasty ass piece of gristle.

I know. Except now I'm almost sorry I did link it, because if the author happens to sumble upon my LJ she might hate me. And I don't want her to feel bad, because it really is one of the better of the spuffy fantasy fictions.

And yet, it is like a train wreck, or a burning house, or a riot. You just can't turn away.

Well, there is something to be said for being able to hold the interest of your audience.
