Jan. 7th, 2003 09:05 pmWell, for the first time in a while (all of season 7 so far?), I watched an episode as it aired. I recorded it too of course, but I actually watched as it went this time! :)
The Good:
Potential Slayers I liked
Rona - I dunno... maybe just cause she wasn't white, and that made her stand out.. maybe because she looked like a normal teenager instead of Dawn-thin. Maybe because she was brand new. But I did like her.
Kennedy - I like the bright, strong ones. She's going to die of course (later, in a dramatic moment).
One with short, brown hair... Chleo? I liked her.
Hmm... I also liked Anya's hair... she's best as a medium blond, rather than dark brown or very pale blond of last spring.
I guess this means Giles isn't dead yet? Or does it... No reason to think the FE can't project itself everywhere at once... after all, it supposedly did for Joyce (huh?), and for practical reasons, it'd HAVE to if it was going to get its minions to be killing Watchers and girls worldwide.
Liked Spike's dream, and loved the final scene of Buffy taking him away. I liked how they walked, arms around each other's waists, and I liked that there wasn't any talking. That's how I imagined it would be between them-- they just look, and that's enough. I loved how JM looked so tragically happy. I liked how in Spike's dream, they didn't talk either, just looked and he smiled. And of course I felt sad for Spike, since I thought "About TIME!" when he broke that minion's neck... and then was all sad when he found out it was a dream.
I actually liked the FE as Buffy this time. It's finally getting the hint that the way to hurt Spike is to break his heart. Toook the damn baddie long enough to figure it out.
Almost favorite....all the times the name "Spike" was said in the previouslies. It was like a irrade of "spike.blal blah blah Spike bla blah Spike and Spike bla blah Spike blah." Kinda funny. And funny how Andrew referred to him as the "special vampire", with air quotes that he saw in everyone else's voices.
Favorite... Buffy being unable to explain in simple terms to the girls why Spike is important to rescue.
MOST favorite... Dawn defending Spike to Andrew, AND Dawn saying "maybe you shouldn't have killed your only friend."
The Bad:
I was disapointed by the lack or gore on Spike. I mean, really, it looks like pretty mild torture (except for the blood draining thing, which must be like the ultimate hell for a vampire, sans swallowing holy water). I mean, his face looks messed up, but not even as much as when Glory went at him. He mostly looked very tired. Are we supposedly to assume that a lot of the torture was done especially so as not to mark his pretty white hide, or what? I'd think that after at least a month of this, Spike would look like he'd been through a meet grinder.
Big let down-- the fighting. For and episode full of hand to hand battles, this one seemed to have corny fight scenes. They need someone new directing the fights.
THE WORST: Why has nobody punched Andrew? Before it was funny, now its tiresome. Every time he opened his fucking mouth in this episode, I wanted to smack his face. Hard, and painful smack. Punch even better. Bring him crashing down to cold hard reality. For a few blessed moments I thought Dawn might do it, but alas she settled for pointed remarks. Good pointed remarks, but I still wanted someone to put their fist in his face.
