Apr. 17th, 2006 02:37 amI missed this the first time around. How did I miss it?
V. G. Cats is love, especially when they do an anime-mocking strip.
Funnily enough, the rant about IY being a rip-off version of Fushigi Yuugi is the exact same argument I gave after watching 15 episodes of Saiyuki: "It's FY, but with gay boys, and everyone is more annoying!"
That being linked, I actually liked IY enough to write some fic (especially the manga), but I stopped watching after around 80 episodes. Picked up a few here and there since then, but frankly I liked the first two seasons best. There was also my raging hate-on for Kikyo that reappeared every time she did.
I just could not.like. Kikyo after a while. At first she was an interesting villain, but then they tried to make her sympathize and I'm like, "Um, no. NO. Nobody who eats souls can get my sympathy, ever." Seeing as she kept eating souls, I kept wondering why Miroku and Sango didn't try to kill her every time they met. That's their fricking JOB. I can't buy into the idea that the heroes will eventually surmount any obstacle to beat any evil guy (it might take IY a while to boost his fighting levels, but such is anime) and then expect them to IGNORE the evil person right over there. For lord's sake, at least acknowledge that she's a soul-eating evil monster. IY is expected to be biased in this, but Kagome, Sango, Miroku, and Shippo know better.
And then, to my disappointment the writers/ Takeuchi didn't even keep her as a villain I could like (the way I love and hate Envy on FMA.) If they'd kept her evil (eating SOULS, hello?!) then at least she'd be more provocative. The more of the series I watched the more it seemed like they were trying to make Kikyo a different person from Kagome, an equally sympathetic person, which to me is a waste of the absolutely fascinating idea that Kagome is a reborn version of Kikyo-- Kikyo is Kagome, twisted and rotten inside but a part of Kagome's soul nonetheless. Think of how awesome that could have been, if they'd taken it further. Instead of trying to make me believe IY loves Kagome separately from Kikyo, why not run with the fact that he loves both of them? BECAUSE THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON. He falls in love with the same woman twice. If that's not proof of his love, I can't think of what would be. Instead of a Kagome/Kikyo/Inuyasha love triang/e, I'd rather have seen emphasis on [KagomeKikyo]/Inuyasha.
Wow. I totally didn't expect to sink into a ranty discussion right there. Huh. Guess I have lingering IY issues.
