She's pretty. I'm not sure why she thinks the Doctor is connected to the Floo network, but I suppose it made sense to her at the time.

51st century? Isn't that Jack's century?
It *is* a Floo network. Okay...
"I don't want to say magic door." That got a little smile out of me.
"Even French?" I love that Mickey thinks French is harder to translate than an alien language.
"We were talking, just a moment ago. I was in your fireplace." Well I'd scream. But maybe that's just me.
Okay, monster under the bed? That was always my nightmare. I slept with my closet door open on a regular basis, but the one under the bed always freaked me out.
Okay that head-tilt thing is disturbing. So is the pseudo-Guy Faukes mask. (sp?)
"He said not to look for it."
"Yeah he did."
Mickey's cute.
"It is customary, I think, only to have an imaginary friend in one's childhood. You are to be congratulated on your persistance."
Well, if I ever meet any of my childhood imaginary friends, I'll have to remember to congratulate them on their persistance. As good a response as any, I suppose, and polite too.
Doctor, you're adorable and I totally get her staring at you like she wants to jump your bones. Stop staring back. You're not a teenager.
"So many questions, so little time." And there she jumps. Why the hell not? Good for her.
...and he's starting to kiss back. What little of the Doctor's supposed asexuality that wasn't obliterated with series 1 is rabidly disintegrating in series 2.
So he looked like a stunned little fish when anyone kisses him? If Captain Jack kissed him he'd have a freakin' heart attack, I think.

The shot of Rose and Mickey looking through the hole into the heart + the magic fireplace + light circus background music is all combining down to give me a definite Wonderland feeling. This is a very bizarre episode.
"What's a horse doing on a spaceship?"
"Mickey, what's pre-revolutionary France doing on a spaceship? Get a little perspective."

The Doctor can do the Vulcan head trip? Could the Doctor do that before, or is that new canon?
"There comes a time, Time Lord, when every lonely little boy must learn how to dance." WTF? Didn't we cover this last season? Wasn't there an episode with a TITLE answering that question?
...you know, this whole Doctor/Renette thing is annoying me, but in its writing, not in the character herself. She appears to be an awesome person, and I totally get her wanting to seduce the Doctor. That all makes sense to me. But the Doctor's being really weird here. Why is he following her when he should be chasing Rose and Mickey?
"...and begged for more..." Wait, pause video, that's...My Fair Lady. Okay, unpause and gawk.
::gawking:: I thought the Doctor couldn't get drunk? Is that fanon or canon blurring my memory? Can the Doctor be drunk?
...so...not drunk? Just prone to embellishing/embarassing behavior, I guess. That's the kind of man the new Doctor is. A rude man who's not ginger but who is prone to outrageous unnecessary displays.
The Doctor riding through a glass mirror? I should love that. Why don't I love that? Why don't I love this episode? What is wrong in Denmark? Something's rotten in this episode, because everything feels off. Like it should be great, but is just lame. They lost the pulse and resonance with the audience. I still like Rennette, but she's the only thing I'm liking. Well, her and Mickey.
Well, if nothing else, David Tennant's hotter than he has been in any episode yet.
"Yeah? Well I'm the Lord of Time." Rude. This is the first episode where I'm actually missing Nine. In every scene I keep picturing "Nine would've been better" or "Nine would've been smoother" or "Nine would have planned ahead." God, WHY are they writing an episode that makes me miss Nine? I was perfectly happy loving both equally. I want that feeling back.
"Here's to the slow path." Um... ::stares:: ...what am I supposed to make of this? Where's my Doctor?
He's as bad at picking up strays as Rose was last season.
Running away from the fireplace? I thought we already learned that leaving the room cosmically triggered the Time Jump Of An Irrational & Inconsistant Number Of Years Depending On Expository Plot Needs?
"Why did they think the could repair the ship with Madame de Pompadour?" Because she Had Unity (Farscape TM) with the Doctor, methinks. Her brain is now filled with bits of his, or something. And his brain can power spaceships?
"I'm always alright."
"Come on Rose, show me around the rest of this place."
I'm really not liking the Kid's Table vs. Adult's Table divide being set between Rose & Mickey and the Doctor & Rennette in this episode. I thought we were past that. Hell, the Doctor's never treated Rose like she sat at the Kid's Table before, even when she was new.
S.S. Madame de Pompadour? The name? *That* is why they needed her brain? That's stupid. My theory was better.
Final thoughts:
I was a bit leery of this episode going in given my flist's mood reaction, but I was determined to give it a fair shot. And I did like the first twenty minutes, even though they were weird. But overall, I have to joing the chorus and say I didn't like it. It could have been better, a lot better. I mean... doors to a person's life all on a single ship? Anachronistic things everywhere? That could have been cool. Madame de Pompadour was cool. And this all could have been fixed by removing the romantic subplot (or at least toning it down by about 60%) and thinking of a better reason than "they needed the parts." A more time-warp-y reason. A more political reason. Or even a very, very personalized reason. But "they needed the parts"? Stupid. And we never even found out why the ship needed human parts in the first place. I could play basketball in the holes in this plot.
And if the Doctor had not been really weird and had instead been the Doctor of the last three episodes, whom I loved, none of this would have bothered me a whit. But I can only sacrifice one-- the plot or the characters. Not both.
That's it. I need the hot tub. I'm off.

You should read some of my comments on the plot and the poor, inconsistent charaterization of Ten. They're not favorable.

Date: 2006-05-08 08:48 am (UTC)I didn't hate the episode, and I thought Sophia Myles as Reinette was awesome, but this was my least favourite episode of the season so far. And you're right, I did miss Nine throughout the episode. Nine would NEVER have left Rose alone with no idea how to get back. I've heard people speculate that Ten always knew he'd find a way back, but still, he had no idea how many time would pass, and it seemed like an unnecessarily cruel move to leave Rose and Mickey stranded. I mean, they were just lucky they didn't die, and it made me wistful for Nine, who would have dropped everything to save Rose. I have loved David Tennant as the Doctor thus far, and he was great in this episode too, but I think I like the Ninth Doctor better than the tenth.
I can't help but wonder how this will affect Rose's relationship with Ten - I think it really will hammer home that he is a completely different man now, and the certainties she had with Nine really no longer apply. I think that's what School Reunion did as well, but it was so much more effective at conveying that than this episode, which felt like it was sacrificing too much to convey what had already been done in the last episode

Date: 2006-05-08 08:58 am (UTC)I haven't seen that myself, but it's utter BS. He had no clue when he went through that mirror if he would get back or not, and his lack of being bothered by getting "stuck" in France with Reinette really pissed me off.
Rather certain he's not going to be able to come back, he just leaves Rose and Mickey behind? If he were that unsure, wouldn't it have been more true to the Doctor's character (not just Ten as an incarnation) to throw the two of them on the back of the horse and take them with him? Oh, wait. That wouldn't have looked as flashy as entrances go. The "kids" would've cramped his style.
I can't help but wonder how this will affect Rose's relationship with Ten
If I were Rose, I would've told him to take me back home. Screw that noise. Who knows what situation he'll strand her (and Mickey) in next?
