A band called Dismemberment Plan did a cover of the song "Crush", originally by Jennifer Paige:

original: listen to this first

DP cover: then listen to this

The entire tone has been turned around, and the cover is actually depressing. I remembered enjoying the original because it was so hot and breathy, listening to the cover, the difference is startling-- the "just a little crush" refrain takes on an almost creepy irony.

Interestingly, the original singer is female and the Dismemberment Plan singer is male-- I think that also changes the song quite a bit. Actually makes me wonder if the speaker's going to a) kill himself, b) kill his crush. Next time we see him he'll be all covered in blood and laughing maniacally while holding a hatchett and babbling "Thought it was just a crush, huh? Didn't you! HahahaHAHAHAHA!" Talk about creepy.

To balance out that weirdness, enjoy this little gem: a 4 minute commercial recording session from the 1960s where Orson Welles, who's reading as narrator rips into his sound director for trying to make him read the lines in a grammatically correct but vocally absurd way, after which he eventually walks out. The whole thing reminds me a little the "Dead Parrot" conversation in Monty Python, except actually is Orson Welles going off.

Audip clip Sendspace: "That doesn't make any sense. Sorry. There's no known way of saying an English sentence in which you begin a sentence with "in" and emphasize it. Get me a jury and show me how you can say "In July" and I'll go down on you. That's just idiotic..."

After you listen to that, watch the Animaniacs parody sketch, and marvel at how much The Brain and Orson Welles have in common.

Holy CRAP.

I loved this song way back when, like hardcore Toxic love (in fact, I think this song prepared me to embrace Britney Spears as hard as I did) and you know I'm hella down with covers and this is, like, the best. post. ever.

I love the instrumentals in the back of the cover, the creepy little string-sounds. It makes it all really, really tense because the vocals are so subdued and you're just waiting for him to break into a scream.

<3. So hard.
