better with two
Jul. 17th, 2006 11:20 amJust watched the DW Confidential for "Doomsday".
I simply love and adore the music videos the Confidential editors make, espeically for Rose and the Doctor. This one was just as good as the one for TPOTW. I was surprised by how many clips of Nine were in them-- it made me all nostalgic. But I actually appreciated it because it gave a nice visual connection between Nine and Ten, from Rose's perspective. Sometimes I had difficulty connecting Nine and Ten as the same person, even though on another level I recognize and accept that they are. It's just-- the multi-doctor and multi-actor thing is very difficult to adjust to mentally, even given such a detailed context as this show gives to regeneration.
I love that Rose/Doctor is canon. RTD: "And are in love with each other. Absolutely, unashamedly, and unreservedly." It's confirmed that they're essentially perfect for each other, that she "humanizes" him while he "Timelords" her-- basically Jackie's warning to Rose in episode 12 about changing is full circle from Rose taking in the TARDIS's power in The Parting of the Ways: she's changing to be like him the same as he's adopting himself to her (as one of the cut-for-time bits of dialogue for the Christmas Invasion script said: impressing on her like a baby chick).
The Confidential also goes into a nice analysis of the Sarah Jane comparison in "School Reunion", and I liked the explanation that Rose essentially takes Sarah Jane's fate as a warning, but in the opposite way, deciding that she is going to stay. "And the Doctor accepts that," as RTD says. He also explains that they very clearly wanted to convey that Rose would stay with the Doctor "until she's dead." And the only way to bust up the OTP when you've established that they would never, ever willingly separate ("so wedded to the Doctor", RTD) is to kill her or to create an unfortunate divide so great even the all-powerful Doctor can't cross it.
This sort of explanation is like the BEST CHOCOLATE EVER for a shipper. I only wish most shows would end with the writer/producer looking at the camera and saying "OTP. OTP. OTP. Yes, we totally and completely meant it as an OTP." I love the pure romanticism of it.
I am sad that we never got to see a real Rose/Ten kiss, though. I know why they didn't (keeping to the traditional limitations of the series), but it seems a shame that if you're going to this much trouble to establish their love as canon (confessions and all), there's not much point in NOT showing a kiss.
They don't mention it in the Confidential at all, but I interpreted the last conversation in "Doomsday" as being confirmation that Rose had a sexual relationship with Ten. The way the conversation touches on the pregnancy question is completely half-and-half down the line: you could read it legitimately as a comment on their sexual relationship or not, and both theories are equally defensible. No suprise then which avenue of interpretation I choose.
...God I want to cry now. MY OTP! IS GONE! And I am sad. And my tv girlfriend, Rose Tyler, is gone too.
