Avatar again, this time with meta
Dec. 3rd, 2006 11:45 pmWait a minute... you mean my little bratty fandom FINALLY got put on fandom_wank?
Damn.
Now they're going to expect people to take the "crazy" label after their name seriously.

Date: 2006-12-04 08:34 am (UTC)As for the Zutara reaction to the finale, the poster just tacked it on. I suppose there's some good in that. Two consecutive AtLA-related entries on FW would have been a worser outcome. Not to mention had the poster made two separate posts - the link to the KZ LJ com would be a LOT more obvious.

Date: 2006-12-04 10:01 pm (UTC)Ah, same here. They are witty and sometimes I find myself checking on the website just for the great snark, but I find myself liking their attitudes less with each comment I read. And it just hit rock bottom after Steve Irwin's death. They snarked a dead man, complete with graphics and 'didn't know him, why should I care' between every other line. I understand that they don't have to mourn him, but at least respect the dead and his wife and kids, you know...?
/off-topic
In response to the wank, I don't really see the big deal, but this might be because I've seen more passionate stupidity on the fanfiction.net boards (i.e., this convoluted "Zutara fan = Nazi" comparison that raised hell). And the thought just occurred to me; why doesn't anyone ever report ff.net board wank? I can't think of a more batshit-tolerant place.

Date: 2006-12-04 08:09 am (UTC)I'm not sure WHY they linked to the k_z comm's episode discussion post, because it really had nothing to do with the wank in question. It may have a large number of posts, but about the finale, not about wikipedia crap.
And of course most of the comments in teh wank post end up talking about the finale, not the wiki wank. While the shipdom's reaction as a whole is kinda wanky in its denial/panic state, I don't think any particular post or comment was all that wanky. There wasn't any infighting or any kerfluffles at the comm; I only saw one combative poster in the very first few comments, and they were shut down almost immediately.

Date: 2006-12-04 10:17 am (UTC)That's what baffled me. I went to the link (I was inadvertently spoiled for the season finale before I went there, so it matters little) and saw nothing but general fan/'shipper reactions. No mention of the old Wiki wank. I'm like, "Why did they drag Rashaka's comm into this BS?".
Relatedly, I need to head over to the ep place and get me some eps.

Date: 2006-12-04 08:12 am (UTC)New/young fandoms are so self-aware these days; the slightest hiccup is treated like WWIII wank. And though it makes me sad to be nostalgic, I still roll my eyes because katara_zuko fandom is pretty tame compared to Jossverse fandom, certain anime fandoms, and HP or LOTR.

Date: 2006-12-04 08:21 am (UTC)I *do* think the overall zutara fan reaction is kind of wanky, if only for its size and intensity of disappointment, but there's no actual wank content in the episode post, no in-fighting or crazy behavior. Just post-episode reactions. And I said in my comment at f_w that the LJ comm's episode post had nothing to do with the wank at wikipedia, though I don't think that matters to the person who posted about it.

Date: 2006-12-05 12:01 am (UTC)This show rocks!!!!11@! Reading your comments & reviews tantalized me, and I watched whatever s1 eps I could snatch over the weekend and, boy, am I glad I did. Wow. The storytelling is *fantastic*; the characters are great, I love 'em all, and the writers accomplish more in 20-odd minutes than other shows do in 40, yes. So, just, thanks for watching the coolest shows on TV, mon ami!

Date: 2006-12-05 06:08 am (UTC)And season 2 pwns season 1. It just finished, so you can watch all the episodes online. The show benefits from watching in order, particularly because continuity is so well-done and so important to knowing what's going on. Trust me on this. Where Avatar shines is in the details. In season 2 that becomes even more important, as the show gets to be even less "village of the week" and more and more continuous. And the content level goes up at least two age-level years in season 2...there's things in season 2 that made me question if I was watching Nickelodeon, or Toonami.
It keeps surprising me. In some ways the overall events are very predictable, built into the basic premise. But it's the execution that's made me love the show... little bombs dropped here and there that leave me grinning or laughing in delight. And it's so ambitious! It's well-researched, well-constructed, well-developed, and well-executed. The world and the cultures are presented with incredible depth and respect, and the show is never afraid to go off on tangents of eastern philosophy and symbolism. They are writing above their target audience, counting on their audience to rise to that level. And it works. You can enjoy it if you're 9 years old, without actually understanding every single symbol or cultural/historical reference. Or you can be a teen/adult and watch it, and enjoy the time and thought put into creating this fictional world and these entertaining characters. In two seasons the show has surprised me the most by how ambitious it is... going for the more difficult or complex story route instead of the easy route.
Also, it's fun. And endearing. Basically, they sought out to make an anime, and they're out-anime-ing the anime. Now you know why it's been my fandom for a year.
When you're caught up, you can read the Zuko/Katara fic I've written. It's the most-mocked ship in the fandom-- and by far the most popular.
