James Cameron is making a movie for Battle Angel?

Oh gods. If I weren't kind of a James Cameron fan (The Abyss!) I'd be terrified. Still, the idea slightly squicks me.

I tried to watch that anime several years ago. I couldn't take it; it was too gross, to depressing, and too nihilistic. I don't even remember if the story itself was any good; it just ended up being a waste of my viewing time with a strong aftertaste of "blegh".

This after learning that M. Night Shyamalan may have signed on the to write, direct, and produce a live-action trilogy of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

What am I supposed to say to such an idea? I'm stumped.

I'd rather not see a live-action version, but if necesarry my ideal director would be some inhuman cyborg combination of the directors of The Brotherhood of the Wolf, Hero, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

On the other hand, at least we know Shyamalan wouldn't be afraid to make it weird and dark. The cartoon/anime itself has turned pretty dark lately for a tween show, so dark would be good. Especially in a live action film, which would inevitably be advertised to a slightly older audience. More like the Harry Potter crowd than the Spongebob crowd.

And who knows; maybe if he's working with someone else's source material he'd be able to reign his sophomore tricks and bring out the talent we know is buried somehwere in there.

If M. Night were to make this movie, I'd be happy if it would focus on the Spirit World. That's really the only aspect of the show I'd think he'd really like to do. But I am a bit nervous, his movies are highly overrated except for the recent two. Also, this is a cartoon that really wouldn't translate well when you think about it. Weird creatures and the bending moves work for animation, but in 3-D probably nothing far from ridiculous. There's also the fear I have he'll have white people portray the characters, but I doubt he'd do that but I don't trust in him either. Also, Zuko is going to look pretty ugly in live action with his scar. Seriously, the damage he suffered isn't pretty.
