::while reading a crappy ATLA / Stargate crossover that never should have been attempted but dammit I really have never read an ATLA crossover before that I didn't write myself::

Oh this is so bad. I can't even describe the reasons this is bad, it's just that bad. Words can't begin to explain...

This crossover needs some serious Methos. I don't care if Methos is from a totally different show unconnected to those two. If I have to read this badness because I'm that starved for crossovers, at least put Methos into the story. It's the LEAST the author could do for us at this point.

If you think about it, no crossover is really 100% until you add some quality Methos time.

This post serves a double purpose: It is also meant as a plea for ATLA crossovers. Anything you read that you liked, please send me links! Please please. PLEASE.

Sorry to bother you yet again, but I wanted to know how you approach character analysis. I apologize if it is a time consuming question that was posted on the wrong thread. As always, you are under no obligation to answer, but since I am new to writing, I was just curious how a seasoned writer, such as yourself, tackles character study. Thank you.

I don't know if I have a specific approach. Are you asking me how I would approach writing a story that analyzes a character (a vignette character study), or are you asking me how I approach writing characterization (i.e. how to present and build a character so that she resembles her canon self)?

Methos? Should I know this?

God yes- I always get bit by the crossover bug, which is terrible because I have never found any good fic in that genre. :(

Methos is the coolest character on Highlander: The Series. HL is the show that's crossable with just about EVERYTHING. It spans timelines so anything that takes place in our world-- in any century-- is fair game for a HL crossover. As is any country or location. It also lends itself well to stories about supernatural powers, like The X Files, or Buffy, or even comics like XMen.

It would be hard to cross it with ATLA seeing as ATLA takes place in a mystical fantasy world, but still, it wouldn't hurt the fic at this point.

While I'm afraid I don't know of any ATLA/SG:A crossovers, I must recommend Vathara (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/77482/) for being my favourite crossover writer :)

I don't even care if it's stargate (I'm not more than a passing semi-fan of SG anyway)-- any decent ATLA crossovers would be helpful.

THanks for the rec.

I have not seen the crossovers you are looking for, but I will keep my eye out! As for the question of characterization... I am a visual person. When I write, I need to 'see' my characters. One of the ways I do that is I cast them. I use ideas from people... the hair of this person, the eyes of that one, the manner of a woman I saw in the grocery... A good friend of mine just bought me a great T-shirt as a gift... on it is the saying "Be careful or you might be in my next novel". Characterization is everywhere. One note though, the character has to be different to attract the reader and hold them. Not necessarily in who they are - they could be a housewife, but in the essence of who they are. The reader wants to know what is going to happen next? Think about some of the most popular characters out there - House, Harry Potter, the cast of Grey's Anatomy... we are always asking ourselves what is this character going to do next? Part of us identifies with them (they cant be so far out there that we dont) and part of us is constantly asking - what is this person going to do next?
