post- HP7, a plot bunny

This is from a comment I made on my previous post, my initial reaction to HP. I am gradually becoming more and more interested in the untold story of Hogwart's students while the Trio is off adventuring in book 7. And I just had this AWESOME thought about pairings...


I prefer Harry/Luna, but I've got nothing really against Luna/Neville. I didn't care for it before because it felt like a pairing that was purely convenience for a fan trying to pair people off, both of them being socially awkward characters. But given that they and Ginny led a resistance movement, there's certainly a whole untold story here that could involve Luna/Neville.

Or... Oh my. It could involve Ginny/Neville.

Oh wow... wouldn't that be AWESOME! Imagine the angst. Ginny being in love with Harry from a distance, but he left her to do his hero thing, and meanwhile she's working with Neville, who has grown up into a damn awesome and noble fighter for the side of good...who is like Harry in so many ways, but is also nicer, more reliable, and less of an inconsistant asshole (I love Harry, but he's made a horrible boyfriend to Ginny you gotta admit), and while the year goes on, something is building between Ginny and Neville, and neither confronts it, but it's building and it might be amazing, and while Ginny never forgets Harry or the pain he's going through, she knows that they're not together anymore, that Harry sent her away, and what she feels with Neville is so very different (she doesn't assist him or learn from him, she and Neville and Luna lead the DA together, as equals), and then just when it's getting really crazy, and things are happening, she and Neville finally break and something happens (a kiss? this is HPverse, after all, and pretty tame), and then BAM! Harry's back, and Harry is Neville's hero/idol in the war, and there's the invasion and the battle and the death, and Harry Potter is here, and what can she do? What should she do?

AU! Someone write it for me, please...

Ooohhh.... I like that a lot.

Isn't it AWESOME? I was never much into Ginny/Neville before, but after this book you've got to admit that it has some fascinating possibilities. At least nine months passing with them at Hogwarts...

How can she ignore Harry now, or choose his friend over him? Harry needs her now that the war's over, needs her to help him recover fom everything he's been through, and she's always been there when he needed her (it's always him needing her, except when he doesn't need her at all, when he needs Hermione who's smarter or Ron who's older, when she's stronger than Ron at magic and always has been), though Harry hasn't been there for her all year. And she hates that thought-- that selfish, childish thought-- because he was gone fighting for her, for everyone. So how what can she say, when he stands triumphant in the hall, with two wands and the corpse of the Dark Lord? How can she not kiss him, not love him? How is it that she knows her whole heart should be singing for him, but somehow there remains a part that doesn't?

That part looks for a boy lost in the crowd, carrying a lost sword and a bruised but blazing heart.

I love Ginny/Neville (though I didn't until the DA). Neville would treat her as an equal, rather than a girl to return to. Also, he would keep her grounded. Meanwhile, Ginny would push Neville to do more and try harder. A very healthy relationship, imo.

(The only other Neville ships I love as much are Nev/Lavender and Nev/Hermione.)

Surely someone has written this though. Have you tried asking on the Help! I'm looking for... board at FictionAlley?


As for Ginny ignoring Harry-- She does it already at the end of the book. True, family comes before exes, but she doesn't even seem to notice his discomfort. Luna does, however. Personally, I've always taken the epilogue as JK realizing her favorite ships were no longer the best supported by canon and so had to force everything. The epilogue is a nightmare Harry has one night (or a play put on by people who need hope) and the interviews DO NOT MATTER AT ALL. (I'll accept the Dumbledore as gay one, though, but not the Dumbledore as having loved only one person in his extremely long life.

Anyway, good luck finding your epic.
