...apparently the Fire Lord knew they were coming, but they didn't bother to find out if he was actually there or not. The Water Tribe or Earth Kingdoms should have had spies in place months ago, as soon as the Avatar met King Bumi and the fought for the Northern Water Tribe. They all knew his mission and deadline...I just... this is basic warfare people! SPIES! GET SOME!
Other than that oversight, and entertaining episode. I thought gathering people together was a hokey, but this is kind of a kid's show. Things I loved:
The costumes! Oh, the battle costumes. I love Katara and Sokka, especially, because they look so very tribal-warrior. Water Tribe represent. Helmets! I also loved Aang's second generation air nomad costume. Much more monkish than his last.
Ming! I'm glad Iroh had a friend in there.
The propensity of female fire nation soldiers! Finally! For the first two seasons we see mostly men and unknowable covered faces, but in the FN itself we're seeing plenty of female soldiers. Sweet.
The Rock! And Haru's mustache. Makes me once again want to point out what I've mentioned before-- for a 17 year old, Zuko's got a shortage of facial hair.
Aang getting his courage up! To kiss Katara. That was very sweet.
I kind of wish the submarines had been derrigables, though. That would have been cool.
Zuko paints! I love that. We already knew that Iroh had done a drawing of his son for the shrine... and now we see that Zuko painted a portrait of himself and Mai, as a gift for her I believe. I love that Zuko has even mediocre artistic talent or will. That's an awesome little detail we've never learned until now. How long has he been surpressing that talent because it wasn't in line with princely responsibilities?
I'm guessing that Zuko is leaving from whereever the Royal Family is (clearly not the capital palace), and going to find his mother. Or going to rescue Iroh... but wait a minute... is Iroh still imprisoned near the palace? He's probably very close to the Avatar's crew, if that's the case and Ozai just left him there. Seems sloppy of Ozai, though, to leave a major threat to the throne in reach of the Avatar.
