The problem with writing original stories is that it's so tempting to base characters on the people around you, like your extended family for instance.

If you ever do manage to write something decent, you would no sooner get it out into the open then have nine cousins, four aunts, three uncles, a grandma, and two second-cousins all calling you with the same embarrassing questions about what the hell you thought you were doing immortalizing them in print, and why the hell you thought they'd all forget by Thanksgiving.

Insist it's not them and that you're basing the character on a teacher you used to know. Then ask if you can borrow their name because, hey, wouldn't it be great to have them in the book?
