Naruto, Chapter 367
Jun. 15th, 2008 11:44 pm"You're the best person for the job in the village, and that's that!"
"We've got Kakashi. And Naruto, eventually."
"Kakashi's a given." ----EEEEHEHEEEEHEEHE! --- "But Naruto's a long way off. Even if you did see fit to give him your necklace."
There it is. Kakashi! He'll be an awesome Rokudaime.
Jeraiya's right about it being bad to have the leader constantly changing or constantly absent.
"Namikaze Minato" ... is that the Fourth's official name? And... holy cow, this is the official canonization of Naruto's parenthood, isn't it? About time. This confirms that the Hokage used his own son for the demon container. Really makes the villagers' betrayal all that much worse. What a way to treat the savior's only legacy. And I'm thinking no one's actually TOLD Naruto who his parents are, yet.
"A female ninja of the former whirlpool country..." I like that Naruto's tied to a water-named village. I like the various water-named villages better than grass or sand or rock or whatever. I like that his mother was a ninja, too. [spiral] Uzumaki Kushina... I guess Naruto took her name as part of hiding his parenthood.
Using rainfall as a detection method is pretty clever. But for the sake of common sense I'm going to assume it only works with rain that's already happening, since all it takes is one meteorology or natural sciences class to show you exactly how complicated the weather system is, and that you can't just create rain willy-nilly.

I'm just super-glad that it's way in the future. That said, have you read this:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4342752/1/Hokage_sama
It's tremendously hot.
I loved what we learned about Naruto's mother, and that he took her name. Also, it's really interesting (to me at least) that ninja can switch villages. I wonder if that can only happen in you marry in, or if you could just move.

Date: 2008-06-26 03:51 am (UTC)I have read that fic. On one level it was hot, on the other level I *hate* the idea of Sakura being Kakashi's girl Friday. Because he can't handle paperwork himself? That's what interns are for. ::shudder:: That would so not be my mental version of the dynamic.
I think I just need to give the idea some consideration, which I haven't yet. Let me go do dishes and I'll get back to you.
Also, it's really interesting (to me at least) that ninja can switch villages. I wonder if that can only happen in you marry in, or if you could just move.
I bet it's very controlled (unless you become a fugitive, of course) and involves permission from respective kages. I also wonder if it doesn't get turned into a kind of economic exchange: if one villager commits to a different village, should their new home pay the old village something for that loss? Trade another ninja? Give them control over territory or clients? Concede on some kind of treaty? Although the ninjas aren't slaves, the close way that their abilities are guarded and hoarded within the villages makes them essential "real" property unto themselves, just for what they know and can teach. And that's not even wondering about what happens if those two villages later come into conflict.
It's also possible she defected or was captured, or joined until less than peaceful circumstances.
One thing I don't understand is why they kept Naruto's parentage from him for so long. I don't know why keep it a secret at all except perhaps if they thought he'd be targeted if they knew his father's identity, but what about his mother? And they should have told him when he became a genin and became an active agent of the village. That would have been the time, because from that moment of graduation he's in danger anyway, for the rest of his life. Now he's 15 and still doesn't know? What could telling him possibly change at this point?

Date: 2008-06-26 04:49 pm (UTC)*nods* That fic worked for me because of how much effort she put into making it clear that it was Sakura's choice to be his attache and that she was were she wanted to be (and wouldn't be staying there). But yeah, in general, it's not the dynamic I like for them.
It's like, that dynamic is what Roy x Riza or Tony x Pepper is for - shoving Sakura and Kakashi in that role... so doesn't work. Plus, I have how passive it is. It's so not a good job for Kakashi - he needs to be doing something where he can crack heads.

Oh, god. Now I want to read a whole jane austen-esque comedy of manners about Naruto's parents getting married! God, that would be so fabulous. I really like the idea of having fugitive ninjas who the village picks up on it's own, and then having ninja's who do everything formally, and the negotations involved.

Date: 2008-06-26 05:36 pm (UTC)I agree with you about the Roy/Riza or Tony/Pepper dynamic... those are cases where they met professionally in those roles, so it doesn't feel forced.
Also, you already have the teacher-student dynamic and the age difference... adding the boss-secretary dynamic on top of that just feels like piling too much. Also, I can't help imagining Kakashi saying "Sakura, what the hell are you doing here? You're a ninja, so go be a ninja! God knows I can't." Well, he doesn't talk like that, but it's the sentiment.

Word. On so many levels. I mean, when you have ALL THOSE REASONS NOT TO... why? One or two, yes, but that much baggage to wade through?
And I highly doubt that he'd want Sakura to be stuck helping him. Especially, when you think about it, Shizune was the one doing Sakura's job in that fic for Tsunade - Sakura was training with her medically. I doubt she actually spent much time watching Tsunade work.
