I seriously thought Nickelodeon's Avatar schedule could not be ANY crazier... I was wrong.

Sometimes you reach a point of madness and absurdity where you think, "Okay, after this, nothing crazier can happen. Surely we have finally reached the plateau of crazy. It can't get any moreso." And then you realize that what you thought was a plateau was really just a step landing, or something, and there's even more crazy yet to come.

Remember when a while ago I complained about the ATLA series finale DVD being released before the finale aired? And you thought, "Shit, how crazy can this network be?"

Well, it turns out that won't happen. And why not? Because Nickelodeon is doing THE ONE POSSIBLE THING to prevent it, short of holding back the DVD's release:

They're airing the final ten episodes in a SIX DAY MARATHON.

And these will be brand new episodes, never aired in the US! Four of them are out on DVD, but still... never aired! So after 4 months of no episodes, we're getting ten new episodes aired every night for a week, culminating on a Saturday.

There's a definite desperation lingering in the background of this story. I can practically feel it. The scheduling people at Nick must be the worst planners in the tv production industry.

My feelings on this subject are more amazement than anything else. I'll be happy the episodes are aired before the finale comes out on DVD, but I'm unhappy that due to my sibling moving in, I'll have to fight for the tv and defend the fact that 10 episodes of a cartoon are suddenly crowding the DVR cue. And I refuse to watch ATLA with anyone else in my house, like I refuse to watch anime with anyone else (I tried to get the sibling to watch FMA, it hasn't worked.)

I might just have to skip the internet for a week, and buy the finale DVD instead. But I really *do* want to be able to participate in the discussions of everyone on a nightly basis. At the least, this will marathon of new episodes will be an entirely new fandom experience--something rare for me.


I put Book 3: Volume 3 on my Netflix list so I'll finally be watching the Boiling Rock episodes. Might as well, I figure.

I figure that they just don't care anymore. As you know, they're doing the trilogy of movies in a couple of years, and I hear that they're planning on making it the next HP, with lots of marketing and stuff at the time. Why focus on the fans you already have, and the series you already have, when you're just going to ramp it up to the nth level in a couple of years. It makes me mad.

I plan on buying the dvds anyway, to support the people who have made the show to date, but I'm going to refuse to see the movies. The least of the reasons is because Shymalan is doing them.

I was thinking of buying the season 3 box set eventually-- I've never bought avatar DVDs until now but I wouldn't mind owning season 3.

I don't think this has to do with the movie, I think they just fucked up with the schedule airing and someone forgot that the DVDs would be released on a set schedule as well. I think they're scrambling for whatever works to avoid having the last dvd out before the show actually airs... because that renders the tv airing pointless and costs them ratings and primo advertising slots on a finale night.


I fully expect I'll want to see the movies when the come out, regardless of who directs them. The first one, anyway. And I've long been of the opinion that M.K.S. would do much better with someone else's written material. Considering the original series creators are heavily involved in teh writing process, I am optimistic.

That is true...

Maybe you're right and they just messed up royally. It's a slightly better thought than neglect...so I'll try to be more optimistic. And MKS...I don't trust him as a director, so I don't know about the movies. Maybe it'll turn out well...I hope so.

I don't want it to be the next Harry Potter, though. I like it being mostly unknown (by adults) and of known quality (to those who pay attention). I'm tired of "crazes" now.

I'm the total opposite-- I love it when things I love get more popular. More money it makes, the more of it there is. More movies, more seasons, more books, more content overall. Plus, I like other people to enjoy what I enjoy, and I want success for the creators.

And more popularity mens a bigger budget which means a better film, at least visually. No garage-level computer graphics for fire.

The only the problem with it being Harry Potter-esque franchise is that it took till the third HP movie for them to get any good.

It's pretty crazy. I'm not generally one for conspiracy theories, but it's awfully tempting when the alternative is "phenomenal incompetence." But, y'know, never attribute to malice, etc, etc.

The article you linked to just made it hurt a little worse, too, because...they're right, it's just being crammed down our throats, all at once. No sense of anticipation. Mm, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to watch it until Saturday...so sure. (The episodes are in the hands of my friend, who has hook-laptop-up-to-TV capabilities so we can watch the downloaded eps on the TV, which basically satisfies most of my complaints with downloaded eps anyway.) :-)

Cool. My DVD won't go out back to Netflix till Monday so I won't probably get the next one until Wednesday or Thursday, but I can hold out then until Saturday.
