Avatar: The Last Airbender world-building speculation:
Do you think the Sun Warriors were conquered by the Earth Kingdom at one point? That would explain why the modern Fire Nation culture more closely resembles the EK in costume and architecture than they do the Sun Warriors.* If the EK invaded or ruled what is now the modern Fire Nation, that would really explain a lot of the visual "look" of the two cultures, and why the Sun Warriors "died" as a culture. Presumably their descendants eventually rebelled and created the Fire Nation.
*except the fire temples, as noted in the script
Yeah... I like that for mental canon. I like that a lot.
Random thought: I love the way Avatar animates hands. Hand gestures, poses, etc.

Kyoshi did mention in her time that Chin the Conqueror was expanding his empire. If you watch the clip, you'll see the expanding covering over the area that's considered Sun Warrior territories. This assuming that other temple that Sokka and Katara got sick at earlier was also part of them at one point.
