I've been asked: Why did I wait so long to watch these and bitch so much about it? I could give you a longer explanation, but the short one is: "I'm weird." Seriously, sometimes that's the only answer that can cover all other answers sufficiently.
What's up with the 5 minute Spongebob ad that I can't seem to skip to get to the menu?
Ooohhh... I like this background montage and the DVD menu layout. Pretty skimpy on the special features, though.
3x11 commentary
I've never heard a commentary by these two before. They're not talking about the same stuff that's on screen. Aahhh... commentaries. o.O Apparently the makers love Zuko as much as the fans, so much that they can't help talking about him even when he's not on screen.
I can't tell the voices apart, just so you know.
Damn, I love this episode. Go Toph!
They were surprised that people figured out that Zuko would be good by episode 4? It was sooner than they expected, apparently. I wouldn't have been surprised by that at all; I guessed by episode 1x03. But I always thought season 1 plot was a little too predictable-- the show really works the shocks and surprises in season 2 and 3 much better.
Go Toph! Bang that door in!
Wow, the war minister has a name? He found the war balloon? Cool.
I know what's wrong with Ozai's secret underground throne room! No windows. No wonder he's so angry at the world.
I love Zuko in this episode...this whole confrontation is awesome.
I love Azula in this episode too. All their costumes, especially the fire costumes, are great.
The throne room overhead shot---I totally don't remember that. Nice.
They mention that Azula's ninja wall-running moves were taken from parkours... that makes sense. It works for Zuko too.
"Not true! I'm giving it my all."
--
"I'll roll your whole head!"
--
"Ignoooore!"
"Ursa kind of saved Zuko's life by...doing something not very nice...to Fire Lord Azulon." What's the point of being coy, writers? Trying to keep that 6-11 rating as long as possible?
They mention Azula's line reading in this episode, and it really is quite good.
The zepplins are CGI? I never noticed. But they are- that's very good, if it doesn't call attention to itself.
You know, I can never remember why Katara stayed behind to support the general battle scene. Was it the lack of water in the caves?
3x12 commentary
"Story wise you want to drag these things out." Sure... two seasons wasn't enough? We needed these ten pointless episodes of filler?
You can't slide down a rope without gloves. That's some serious friction burn right there.
Zuko does have that personal habit of holding the bridge of his nose... that's a subtle thing that they've shown over time.
"Hello. Zuko here!" ...that's still an awesome rehearsal scene. Iroh badger frog!
Appa/Zuko OTFriendship!
"Katara has the hardest time because she was probably the most emotionally invested in Zuko," Heehee. Even in a non-shippy way, that's cool to hear because it really matches with the season 2 and season 1 finale fights.
["How stupid do you think we are?!"] - "I always feel like Katara's speaking for the fans in this episode." Word.
"50% of the fans... or whatever the Kataang people are. 52 / 48 split now. ..the latest polls..."
"Yeah, how's Zutara doing in the Iowa caucus?"
We're super, thanks for asking! We endorse Obama, natch. We're the ship of change, the underdog of precedent.
"I think we've got Oprah backing the Kataang." Dude, don't kill kataang for me with statements like that. I still LIKE the pairing.
I like that they refer to the episodes as "one-thirteen" or "two-twenty" instead of "thirty-nine" or "forty-four."
There's some nice animation with the Katara>>>Zuko wipeout. They're right, the lightning here really is nice.
The long dialogue *was* a really nice touch about this episode. This episode was essentially one long conversation.
Man, I haven't seen this Toph-burning scene is still hard to watch. And they're right, that one rock-pillar was the move that killed Jet. "This was more of a rough shove." As is most of the earthbending in show show, because in reality, one hit from almost ANY earthbending move would kill or cripple people. Incapacitate them for months with major surgery and bones shattered into gravel in the blood.
"...do something bad to Jet..." They can't even say 'kill' in the commentaries? Wow. Comparing this to level of joking and mature content in the Princess Tutu DVD commentaries is like night and day. And PT was aimed at roughly the same audience age group.
The sets and background design are really nice. Especially how they work it into the fight sequence.
Sokka's poses really are precious, I agree.
Bryke noted in this "resolution" scene that Zuko is not nervous anymore and is making his points well. I've noticed that over the last two seasons--when Zuko's upset he's a poor speaker, but when he knows what he's about, he can be quite eloquent. He was very well-spoken with his father in the DOBS.
"I really thought Sokka would be the one who was prejudicial, black and white..." Me too; I thought that since season 1. But I also agree that it works better with Katara. The more empathetic and moral and righteous you are (and oh, Katara is) the more angry and resentful you can be. But even still, after Katara, Sokka is worse than the others. I think the southern water tribe siblings really have this "our people were victimized" thing that only the airbenders have worse.
"..lunch?" heeheheeehhee.
Bryke: "Woman scorned."
Uh... what? No. Don't even go there. Don't make me reach through time and space and my tv to PUNCH YOU.
I'm just going to skim episode 3x13. Favorite line:
"Hey jerks. Mind if I watch you two jerks do your jerkbending?"
Closely followed by Toph's suspiciously quick "Don't look at me!" comment.
Next post... Boiling Rock!

Date: 2008-06-27 04:31 am (UTC)That weirded me out SO MUCH the first time I watched the episode. It still weirds me out. Like, I think she stays behind to take care of her father. But still--it's supposed to be THE battle. Like hell Katara stays behind.
Although in a way it kind of completed the whole Katara-is-weirding-me-out arc that happened in the first half of season 3. Like, it's the culmination of Katara's crappy times. And then, in the next episode, she starts to come back to being herself...COINCIDENTALLY AT THE SAME TIME ZUKO REAPPEARS IN HER LIFE. Which just made me really happy, as a shipper, but also as a Katara lover. Hell yeah, she's pissed, and she's letting him know. That's my girl.
"Hello. Zuko here!" ...that's still an awesome rehearsal scene. Iroh badger frog!
I wanted to hug the writer who wrote that scene. Like, honestly, I think it was the most in-character Zuko speech I've ever heard in my life. I think it was also the first time I was 100% happy with Dante Basco's voice. It was, literally, perfect.
The nose-bridge-holding! It's things like that that makes me squee so hard over Stormbenders, too, because she keeps including them. :-D
I thought Sokka would be more prejudice tooooooooooooooooo. But he is also more pragmatic than Katara, which also balances out the victimization thing. (Question: Is the entire Southern Water Tribe reduced to only their village? I couldn't quite figure that out.)
