This is kind of my crack OTP, so I'm just popping in to say a couple of things.
Honestly, at a basic level, Deidara is hot (and a walking kink) and Sakura is hot. Hot guy/hot girl. On another, enemy ships can be really, really steamy.
Depending on where you decide to go with Deidara's character, there's an interesting dynamic, too. He's obsessed with explosions. Sakura busts things up with her fists. It's not a stretch to imagine that he might become fascinated with her.
I personally like to think that because he's obsessively artistic, he could fall in love relatively easily. Like, he gets the idea in his head and becomes fixated on it. Other authors will write him being conflicted about being "in love." Keeping Deidara in character can be tricky, because he's not a major character and there's wiggle room, but he's not a woobie. I counteract that by keeping him nuts, but one doesn't have to.
As for Sakura, it's always a bit of a dance getting her to be interested in someone other than Sasuke and, to some extent, Naruto, isn't it? Some people do it better than others.
Plus, Deidara's snarky and clever and can keep up with Sakura in a physical fight and an argument. And the smut can be really fucking hot XD
It really depends on the individual fic how well it works. I personally portray it as kind of violent and dysfunctional but no less real, but I've seen good fics that have them involved in a more functional relationship. Basically, if you're open to it, I'd give one of the better fics a try.
Thank you for the explanation. I think it must come down to whether or not you even like/care about Deidara's character, which I don't. To me he was one of 5a half-dozen throw-away Akatsuki villains that came and went within an arc, and had no particular connection to Sakura individually. Also... I didn't find his character at all attractive. I couldn't tell if he was male for female for several chapters.
But, now that question's answered, thanks! I was wondering if there was some Sakura/Deidara exchange or conversation in canon that this was all based on which I somehow forgot, but it doesn't look like it.
Yeah, that probably has a lot to do with it. After Kakashi and Sakura, the Akatsuki is probably my favorite bunch of characters. I have no idea why, although a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I find them funny. And honestly, I find him more attractive in the anime (Kishimoto sometimes gets really wonky with his character designs). When I first saw pictures of him, I thought he was female, too. It's the hair.
Nope, no such exchange occurred. I don't think they ever directly speak to each other. Like I said, it's total crack.
And that you know he would totally dig a girl who could cause that much destruction with her pinky-finger.
(I have to say, that there as only been on Deidara/Sakura I really loved, and that was because of how they characterized Deidara which was awesome and unique and worked.
