It baffles me that a school, even a school that exists in purgatory, which has teenagers doing dangerous magical/spiritual battles with the risk of grevious injury and death wouldn't have an on-campus psychological counselor.

Shibusen has....a nurse. Yeah, totally listen to a school nurse who advises that you simply ignore your psychologically horrific PTSD dreams. Great environment for the students right there, dudes.

In other news, the show had a rough start, but it's growing on me. I am still only so-so on Black Star (he's a long way yet from geting Naruto-levels of sympathy from me to balance out the annoyance factor), but I really enjoyed Tsubaki in episode 11. Her battle was very cool, and I enjoyed the dynamic between her and her partner. The show is doing some surprising things with gender dynamics, and although I normally don't like the submissive, timid types (Hyuuga Hinata, bleh), Tsubaki won me over. Right now Tsubaki's partnership is the best thing about Black Star.

Maka is interesting, and I feel like she'll only get more interesting as we go along. She seems like a blend of Harry from HP, Sakura from Naruto, and Haruhi from Ouran HSHC. She's talented, exceedingly talented, and she's ambitious--but she thinks about things too. She moves forward without fear, but she doesn't rush in foolishly like Black Star. She and Soul Eater compliment each other well. I love how she's first on the scene in episode 12, looking for the witches.

I'm kind of "Ehh whatever" on Stein. Right now he reminds me too much of this guy. Except, you know, Stein's really built under his lab coat. He gets off on scaring high school kids, which is a respectable pastime, but otherwise he's boring.

The animation is interesting. Scenery aside, the style of character design reminds me a lot of Mahou Shojoutai / Tweeny Witches, except that show was stunningly beautiful to look at it, whereas this is mostly too dark and too sharp. But that's fair enough, considering a story about grim reapers and people who hunt down soul-eating monsters isn't supposed to be beautiful. And I won't say it's boring; it's definitley not.

It's growing on me. I had initial reservations about Blackstar and Stein, as well. But both are growing on me. You'll see fairly shortly.

please catch up with me! then I'll have someone else to fangirl with!

*chuckles* My personal nickname for this show is "Harry Potter and the Naruto Before Christmas", which...pretty much sums up my first impressions. It was initially meant to be scornful, but as the show has grown on me, it's become an affectionate moniker. XD
