Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Lousiana, in the official Republican response to Obama's totally swinging speech tonight:

Jindal: "And 140 million dollars for something called 'Volcano Monitoring'. Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, DC." [05:25]

Dude.

Dude. I am totally in approval of the government monitoring volcanoes. Those things EXPLODE. (You idiot.)

I've never heard of this guy until now; he was elected governor after I spent a summer in New Orleans. But frell this guy for A) trying to blame the misery of Katrina on the government of now as if it wasn't their administration that totally fucked up, B) exploiting disaster, C) scaring us with gas prices, D) TALKING TO AMERICANS LIKE CHILDREN WITH YOUR INSULTING, APOCRYPHAL PARABLES. and E) unfortunate punning.

And, sure, I only live there for four months so I'm not a native like Jindal, but in my time there the Louisiana citizens I met were the most politically cynical people I've ever talked to in my life. I'm pretty sure the jokes about corruption are still being told over beers and seafood; it's more likely that nobody feels comfortable telling jokes around Bobby Jindal.

I don't understand what the GOP was hoping for with this speech, and with this guy's demeaning, sing-song speech style that sounds like he's addressing a class of third graders. I've heard better Republican speeches than this; I know they exist, somewhere out there. He's making me appreciate our governor, a difficult feat.

Jindal? LOL. Google "Bobby Jindal exorcism" or similar. He's a keeper, this one (and a very strong candidate for the Repubs in 2012, from what I've read).

Ha, that's what I was gonna say. Which is obviously why he's feeling the need to shoot off his mouth...anything to become a topic of conversation. Like we're doing right now. We may think he's an idiot, but at least we know his name, and we'll try to remember it if we want to rant about what a moron he is correctly. :P

...

Is this guy not old enough to remember Mount St. Helen's? I mean, I'm not, but I'm not governor of Louisiana.

And scientists assure us that the entire northern half of Wyoming (Yellowstone & more) is one huge caldera that could turn into a volcano. Either twenty years from now, or, you know, tomorrow.

To be fair, if that supervolcano was all going to blow we'd all be completely screwed. It would most likely take out a huge chunk of the US and the dust would get into the atmosphere and block out the sun all over the Earth for God only knows how long. It would be absolutely catastrophic. So monitoring it wouldn't matter so much, as we'd just be preparing for the end of the world as we know it.

Sort of freaky to think about.

If the government was monitoring it though, they could call in Buffy Summers to save us. DON'T TELL ME THE INITIATIVE ISN'T REAL.

Yeah, the Yellowstone supervolcano (at fault for our ridiculously fertile plane states) erupts about every 200,000 years.

Which would be comforting, it its last eruption wasn't bout 200,000 years ago.

Dude, we're several tens of thousands of years overdue for the Yellowstone caldera to explode, and the last time it did it caused so much damage to the planet the population dwindled down to five thousand people. They can monitor that thing ALL THEY FUCKING WANT.

my friend pointed me to this:

It was a mock-documentary BBC did about all the ways we could die horribly. This one is about Yellowstone.

Heeeeeeeeeee. That's my governor.

There're rumors that this guy is planning to shut down two state hospitals that provide health care to regions that don't have any other hospitals, thus making those people travel serious distances to get treatment.

Why? Why, budget cuts, of course!

I just watched it.

. . .Wow. When the president makes such a magnificent speech and. . .that's your response? Jeez.

It was made more palatable by my Dad's wisecracks, though.

Mainly, he didn't seem to even understand the stimulus bill, and his opening made way too big a deal out of Obama being the first African American president. It felt weirdly like he was saying that that was all that mattered, so he didn't need to be taken seriously.

I've heard the GOP might have him run for Prez at some point, so I hope he makes himself look like a tool often enough and blatantly enough that, by the time they nominate him, the American public is totally put off.
