Pushing Daisies 2x11-2x13 [series finale]
May. 3rd, 2009 06:36 pmWith the exception of everyone going their separate ways in the last two minutes, this could have served as a simple season finale.
I flailed for Ned and Olive (for the first time ever, I want fanfic for this show...goddamn shipping instinct), and I flailed for Chuck and her aunts in episode 2x13.
I also flailed for the whole Emerson Cod thing. I finally liked Simone, once she showed some vulnerability and stopped being a relentless too-bitchy caricature. Rather, this had two very similar women who had the domineering bitchy thing both growling it out over Emerson, which says a lot about who he's attracted to. And then she saved him at the end! =D I also loved Simone & Olive tag-teaming Lilah. HUZZAH!
I've never really shipped Ned/Chuck because their romance was too immediate and too easy...them staring longingly at each other was the least interesting part of the show, though seeing them argue WAS always fairly entertaining, because they'll both go to silly lengths for each other. I never really shipped Olive/Ned for pretty much the same reason, because she stares longingly and they'll never be together. But ep 2x11 tossed a little kindling on the fire that I'd never given notice to until now, and I finally started shipping Ned/Olive. In the case of Chuck, I've never really been convinced that she wasn't with Ned just because he's there and she can't be with her aunts. Of course she cares for him, but if she had to choose I think she'd choose her aunts, so I've never really bought into them as a True Love couple, because there's a significant element of convience there.
Still, I was really glad that Ned finally confessed to Chuck that his reasoning for hiding her life status from the aunts was ridiculous at this point, and more about his fears than about her happiness. I've wondered in the past why it was so terribly important that they not be told.
My favorite part of this show has always been Emerson/Ned/Chuck Team Spirit OT3, which later became an OT4 Team Spirit with Olive included. That friendship stuff was wonderfully played in the last few episodes, from the Norwegians to the water circus. My only significant disappointment, and the one that keeps me from feeling the OT4 love, is that we never got to see Olive's reaction to learning about Ned's powers. I get the impression he never told her at all, or never plans to. And that's too bad, especially coming after the new relationship/jealousy subplot was raised in 2x11 and because of cancellation will never be resolved. But aside from shipping, I'm just sad that he didn't tell her, as his friend. She's as close to him as Emerson or Chuck, and she would keep his secret safe.
