I still ship Mai/Earth King.

I still think that somewhere there's the unwritten tale of a political marriage and tense interactions and his silliness softening her sternness and her analytical and ruthless mindset guiding the EK into a shining era of political badassery...basically, forced marriage trope that we've seen a bajillion times for Zuko/Katara, Zuko/Song, Toph/Zuko, Katara/Aang, etc. But gender flipped.

With Mai and the King of Ba Sing Se!

And his bear. Sadly no one has written the fic for me, yet.

As I was rereading my post to comment, I was reminded how most of the fics I read with political marriages for K/Z had Katara 'softening' Zuko--especially season 1 and 2 fics before he softened naturally with exposure to the atmosphere outside his ship--but then my brain turned, and I tried to think if I'd read any the other way around. Where Katara is all damaged or mean or ruthless or cold or something (maybe with how Aang leaves/dies on her) and Zuko is the nice one of the forced marriage, the one actually trying to win her over with kindness and empathy and humor.

I don't think I've read that.

But it's off topic! Because, seriously, Mai/Earth King 4 Teh Win!

Byzantine Emperor and Empress. Theodora was some sort of performer--possibly ye oldye worlde strypper?) before he fell in love with her? Apparently she was very clever politically. And they rocked together very hard. I haven't done any, like, reading on her. My hist. teacher just mentions them as some of her favorite scandalous, sexy, ancient world couples.

Oh, God! That is one of those little seen tropes that I just LOVE. Eat it up with a spoon, really! Since I saw it in Magen Whalden Turner's Queen of Attolia/King of Attolia books, I've held it quite dear.

She could be all driven and blood bendy! That would be awesome.
