It's positively ridiculous how much I love these films. My third time, and I was still awed. I sat through the whole thing grinning madly, unable to restrain my simple glee at being there; even during the more poignant emotional moments I was smiling like the village idiot.
And what a gorgeous film. I can't imagine why it wasn't nominated for cinematography. The two scenes that particularly stand out in my eyes were of course the final charge down the slope by Gandalf & the Riders of Rohan, but most especially
the scene of Eowyn striding out the front doors of the castle, hair whipping in the wind, as she watched the flag be torn from the heights and flitter down and away, the valley landscape strechting out with mountains in the distance. I love that moment, and it was made even more emotional byt the beautiful score accompanying it.
I think the theme for Rohan is my favorite piece of music so far, from both movies. I also thought, listening to it, that the music of The Two Towers is prettier than for The Fellowship.
Some favorite lines:
"I smell...MAN FLESH!"
"I fought my enemy and smote him upon the mountainside."
"Wraiths! Wraiths with WINGS!"
(I don't know why, but something in the way Gollum said this struck me as horribly funny, even though the moment wasn't particularly so. I think it was how high his voice got, almost incredulous. Or maybe it reminds me of RedBull commercials? But three times now it's sent me into giggles.)
"I know your face."
"The women of this country learned long ago that those without swords can still die upon them."
"You're late. You look terrible."
"I told them your names, and we have decided..."
"..."
"..."
"...Yes?"
"We have decided... that you are not Orcs."
"Well, that's good news."
"Give it to us raaaawww and wriggling!"
"That doesn't make any sense. Then again, you are very small."
"...The last march of the Ents."
"Nasty, treacherous, filthy little hobbitses!"

Date: 2003-02-15 11:19 pm (UTC)I didn't actually notice that it wasn't nominated for cinematography. That irks me, because like you, I really loved the imagery of those two scenes. The whole movie is beautifully done. I will always be in awe of Peter Jackson.

Date: 2003-02-15 11:43 pm (UTC):g: I liked them. I'm not sure if I got the first part of Gandalf's quote rihgt, but its close enough. I loved the lines from Gollum and the Treebeard. Also, the shot of Treebeard throwing his arms and head(?) back and and roaring in Entish, and then all the Ents emerging from the forest, was a favorite visual as well. Awesome.
I will always be in awe of Peter Jackson.
I keep thinking "Dear god that I don't believe in, what am I going to do after next year? I might never be this excited for a film again!"
The whole movie is beautifully done.
Did you know that this year New Zealand was the hottest, most sought-after tourist spot in the world? Bet we know why that is, huh. The films let everyone in awe. My parents got to go to NZ three years ago, before LOTR was out, and they only saw part of the northern islands (LOTR was shot in the south), but they said it was beautiful. I was jealous then, and I'm even more jealous now, knowing what it looks like.

PJ is God.

Date: 2003-02-16 06:50 am (UTC)I just rewatched Two Towers yesterday and started rewatching AGAIN the extended edition. SIGH. These movies are so perfect. The cinematography, the music, the characters, the story, even my little shipper heart was satisfied with the story of Aragorn and Arwen.
You got me wanna watchin it some more, so I think I'm gonna do it NOW!

Ah, see for once my little shipper heart is actually going for the non-canon pair. I think Eowyn should get Aragorn. But I know mine is a hopeless dream. :sigh:

:g: About 7/10, the default movie in our house right now is LotR. It always seems to be on.

Date: 2003-02-16 12:42 pm (UTC)I actually respect that. Cause as much as I love Aragorn & Arwen I did see the appeal of Aragorn & Eowyn, and even got the romantic vibe about them. Hated myself for it, but still felt it. I'm such a sucker for destiny, destined, and all that, that I could never in my heart ship for anyone but Aragorn with Arwen, but I will admit, I do understand feeling the other way, even if I don't :-)

Date: 2003-02-16 07:52 am (UTC)I think that and the Aragorn-after-he's on a tomb scene are the two most beautiful images in a movie filled with beautiful images. Seriously, in some ways, these movies are like paintings to me - just filled with these indelible images.
P.S. I get all teary-eyed at many many points during these films as well ;)
Re:
Date: 2003-02-16 11:46 am (UTC)Did you know that they used many of the paintings that have been inspired by the books over the years to give them ideas of how the different scenes should look? I've gotten some of the Tolkien calendars before the movies came out, and you can see the inlfuence. Its clear in scenes like the Balrog, the Nazgul crossing the river and being swept away, the giant eagles, Sarumans tower, the Ents... Sometimes its like watching that art come to life.
