I just went into 3 different rooms of my house and muted 3 TVs.
Ah....blessed silence.
For maybe 2 minutes until my dad turns them all back up again.
Wait....wait... AH! There goes the living room tv. So much for my taking a breather to think without background chatter.
I feel a headache developing in my right temple.
ETA: The following is a message I sent out to my local city council member tonight...
Councilwoman Chirco,
I'm a first year student at De Anza community college, and a 2002 graduate of Leigh High School here in San Jose. I've always had a passive interest in politics, and since graduating that interest has grown, and I am now considering choosing that as my major when I transfer to a university. Two months ago I met with a family friend, [88888888888] who works in the office of Santa Clara District Supervisor Donald F. Gage, and she spent an afternoon showing me around her office and telling about her job and office environment. It was a wonderful experience, and has only increased my desire to become involved in my local political system.
So I'm contacting you tonight to ask about open internships available. I live in the 9th district, and thought it best to ask my local representative first. I believe an internship with my local city government would be not only a great learning experience but would add to my college education process as well. I'd also like to ask about other council districts you might have knowledge of with open internships.
I've also been scouring the internet for information about how to get involved in the Democratic party, but websites on the internet have been less than fruitful, often leading me in circles, and I have not had any responses to questions I have sent via email addresses the websites themselves provided. This has become a highly frustrating experience, as it leaves me feeling alienated from the political parties that claim to represent me and want my membership. As teachers have told me for years in school that it's important to vote and be policitally active and invovled in your own government, the reality of difficulty in doing so if you're not already connected has been disheartening.
I am interested in internships, as well as other options. I have strong talents in writing and art/ visual design, and I went through High School in Honors & AP English classes. If internships are not open with your office at this time, I would still like any advice you could give on how I could further pursue being politically active as a student and California resident.
