What's up with the 80s revival in pop music?

I noticed it slowly over the last two or so years. A lot of songs becoming popular that have that THING... that undescribable thing that sounds like 80s music, the way there's a thing that always sounds like country music. But I know these songs are new.

It started with "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World. You can also hear it in songs like "Somebody Told Me" by The Killers, or that song by Frans Ferdinand.

I listen to this stuff and I like it, but in the way I like groups from music before my time-- it's fun to listen to but it's not my generation therefor I don't really bond with it in a lasting way. But the messed up thing here is that this new stuff *is* my generation... it's the generation I'm in right now, being twenty years old and in the prime of my listening-to-music-at-high-volumes period.

But it all feels so retro that it ultimately leaves me unsatisfied.

I feel kinda bored as a rock music fan. There's songs and records that I like and that I will buy or download, but there's nothing that I really, truly love.

The world of rock music is failing me so I'm biding my time with pop and emo punk, waiting for something really cool to land.

p.s. what's with all the 70s style hair? Ew. Stop it. Grow it to your shoulders and beyond or cut it above your mouth, guys... I don't like that stage in between. See Hatori's hair in this icon? That's the longest your bangs are aloud to be before you're required to grow your entire head of hair to your shoulders. Either have long hair or don't, none of this pussy-footing around the middle with chin length.

I got my 4th Amendment tote bag in the mail!

It's perfect. I am so pleased. Well worth my 24 dollars.

- Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead... because Richard Dreyfuss cracked me up with this line.

FullMetal Alchemist timeline canon question:

When in the series did Mustang go from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel? Was he a Colonel by episode 25?

For [livejournal.com profile] psychodragon82, [livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue, [livejournal.com profile] mooness, and the other FMA-addicts on my list.

A raw teaser snippet from the beginning of my Roy fic, episode 25. Kinda jerky on the transitions, but I'm just happy I've finally gotten started.

No, [livejournal.com profile] jaina, I didn't write you any VxM fic.

But I found you something just as sappy and twice as good:

This Too Will Pass

The Hokage watched the village from his window, taking in his first view. Behind him a new desk sat with an empty chair waiting to be filled and a stack of file folders and scrolls waiting to be read.

But paperwork could be done later. He yelled through to door to his new assistant, who appeared impressively in a puff of smoke before the words finished leaving his mouth.

"Udon, for my first act as Hokage, I want you to summon Hyuuga Hiashi, and all the upper- and lower-level heads of the his clan. Anyone of any decision-making importance in that family, I want them. And once they all arrive, be ready to handle some shouting."

You know, I just remembered something I'd forgotten over 40+ episodes...

Roy Mustang knew their father. That's how he found them as kids, because in like episode 2 or 3 they wrote to all the people their father knew.

How could I have forgotten that? That's one massive plot thread left hanging. And this show does do hanging plot threads. Everything matters. Everything has a place in the big picture. But I'd gotten so distracted by 40+ episodes where it never came up that it slipped my mind.

Now it's going to plague me. Damn.
