On a lark I'm rewatching some of the anime music videos I have saved on my harddrive, and I'm currently looking at one to the song "Carry On Dancing" by Savage Garden. The vid draws almost totally from the Sailor Moon R Movie. It's reminding me of a couple of things from my younger (middle school) days of being in love with this rather embarrassingly bad series.

1.) I forgot how gay they made Darien's/Mamoru's character. And the fact that practically every villain fell in love with him. Whereas I think the only villain to fall in love with Serena/Usagi was Prince Diamond. The SMR movie was especially slashy, though mostly in an unrequited-on-Darien's-side way. Dude, all.those.flowers. But he's not gay in the funny, witty, someone who has better taste in clothes than straight men or women way, instead he's gay in that asshole, self-destructive, manipulative, pity-me way that resembles the stereotypical straight man. I used to vascillate between loving Darien for his woobie angst (he does have reason to angst, tis true)f and the fact that he sometimes gets to use a sword and wear armor, and wanting to smack Serena for running back to him like the good little woman because really she could do better.

2.) I still kinda think he's hot and he and Serena have Teh True Love ::cue sparkles::....even though he doesn't deserve her cause he's a jerk and she would never get a date with him in a million years if he were a real guy because he'd be going out with Mina or Ami instead...but they still have Teh True Love!

3.) I loved that whole dynamic of inner scouts versus outer scouts, especially the past life speculation of canon and fanon, where the inners were the princess's bodyguards and loyal to her, and the outers were the somewhat amoral and not-to-be-trusted warriors (and possibly dirty-work-doers) of the crown, with loyalty to the cause but not their princess.

4.) I also loved the whole past life thing in general. I don't think I've yet seen an anime or movie that uses the idea of a past life so heavily in the cannon mythos of the main storyline-- I mean, shit, the tragedy of the past life is the whole baseline for the canon of the current timeline. Maybe that's why season one was my favorite. The only comparable use of past-life in a series that I've seen is the Daggerspell books by Katherine Kerr. Which were, might I note, much better than Sailor Moon.

5.) Truly, everything was more interesting before Rini. Rini sucked the fun right out of SM. And they kept her and brought her back for like 2 or 3 seasons anyway.

::watches first half hour of The Legend of Earthsea on Sci Fi channel::

::has multiple strokes at the absolute rape of the books::

Edit: His secret name is Sparrowhawk? Wait a minute-- isn't that backwards? I know that's backwards. Sparrowhawk isn't a secret name, it's the name he takes on in the wizard community to keep everyone from learning his true name, Ged. GRRRRRRR.

Edit: By far, the WORST thing about the Sci Fi channel is its previews. I don't need to know the entire plot and most important spoiler of the next half-hour segment when I'm about to WATCH IT TWO COMMERCIALS LATER. This has bothered me for years that they do this. Why should I even watch the show at all? I can see the whole thing from the promos, and earlier than the people actually watching it too.

I looked at this joke list of "You Know You're From the Bay Area When" here: http://www.blogthings.com/bay-area.html

Most of the jokes were kind of lame, and there was a lot missing, but I posted the ones that I felt were accurate to my or my family's life, and bolded the few that were particularly appropriate.

You make $120,000 a year, yet still can't find a place to live.

Your commute time is 45 minutes and you live 8 miles away.

You know vast differences between Thai, Vietnemese, Chinese, Japanese, Cantonese, and Korean food.

You think that "I'm going to Fry's" is an acceptable excuse to leave the office for a while, and your boss does too.

You know that 280 North goes west and that 680 North goes east.

It rained ... and your birdbath fell over ... or your tree fell over ... or a utility pole fell over.

It rained ... and the spiders came in ... and the ants came in ... and the mice came in.

You get email from a co-worker at 10:00PM ... and you are both still in the office.

None of the people you work with are bible thumpers.

The last one is the only one that sort of touched on the politics of the Bay Area, which is odd because we're a fairly politically minded part of the state, and someting like an 70 or 80 percent majority liberal.

Word about the rain though. We've had fences fall over, MANY trees fall over, and yeah, a telephone pole once too. And that's just on my block. I wouldn't say it rains a terribly lot here, but when it does it often rains with a sense of spite.

I've never had mice come in, though. But the ants and the earthworms and the snails all go out onto the sidewalks when it rains and you can't walk without stepping on a few.

I'm looking for some recs for Farscape fanfiction, set after the miniseries.

Unfortunately, I've never read more than a few FS fics, so I don't know where to look to find the good stuff. Someone rec me something?
