Before you ask---No, not seen the episode yet.

This is a sad, beautiful song that my mother played for me a few years ago.

It's gorgeous in its own right, but it makes me think of Buffy & Spike now, too. Especially all the sex scenes of Dead Things, and the scene where Buffy seeks out Spike in AYW. In fact, its almost chilling how close this describes their relationship.

WATERCOLORS
(Janis Ian)

I remember photographs
Watercolors of the past
He turned & said - You ask much of me
Then, when we'd made our peace
We lay between the sheets
He turned & said - I set you free

Go on, be a hero, be a photographs
Make your own myths
Christ, I hope they last
Longer than mine
Wider than the sky
We measure time by
Go on, be a hero, I set you free
Your stagehand lovers have conquered me
They'll send you carnations
While smiling faces look on and applaud
Go on, go on, go 'way from me

I said - do you wish me dead
Lip service to books you've read
Articles on how to bed a bird in flight
You called it love
I called it greed
You say - You take what you want
I say - You get what you need

Go on, be a hero, be a man
Make your own destiny if you can
Go find a fence, locate a shell
And hide yourself
Go on, go to hell, go away from me
I need no charity

He said - come unto me, I am beauty, I am the light
Come unto me. Hold the darkness and stay the night
For I am wonder, I am the heart's delight
Tomorrow we'll fight

Come on come on, come near to me
Come be my fantasy
We'll talk it over again some time
I'll send some flowers
And change your mind
But for tonight, turn out the light
Hold me- Come on, come on
Set me free
Lend me your charity

::sigh:: A good, mature love story is so complicated isn't it?

Are not some of these line scarily appropriate?

Nos, if you're listening, you need to try and download this song, or hear it somehow. I think you'd love it too. :) And [livejournal.com profile] anniesj, [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_ ... if you guys are reading this then you can't tell me this doesn't appeal to your deliciously smutty, angsty minds. ;)

It's funny that you posted that song. My own mother was a folk singer in Savannah for about ten years, and her catalogue of songs was about half Janis Ian. She's one of her biggest fans. I inherited the same love for Janis from Mom, and that song is one of my all-time favorites. Then again, I love all of "Between the Lines" -- such a great album. "Between the Lines" is another great Spuffy song, and "Jesse" is still my mother's signature song.

So yes, definitely. See the angst, register the angst, love the angst. ;-)

haHa. ::giggle:: I have a copy of my mom's Between the Lines CD. "From Me to You" for a long time was my X-phile Scully/Mulder song. Back before I even knew what songfics were.

I also loved "Light a Light For Me"((angst)), "Tea & Sympathy"((sad)), and "Lover's Lullaby" ((sweet and subtle)).

Awwww man, I love "Tea & Sympathy". That's one of my all-time faves. So, so very sad. Almost as sad as "When Angels Cry" -- if you haven't heard that song, remind me and I'll send it to you. From one of her later albums, "Revenge", and so gorgeous. ::sniff::
