Americans who don't live in the SF Bay Area:

Do you know what a "valley girl" is? Or, do you know what "valley girl talk" sounds like?

I'm curious, because I was chatting with my mom, and she thinks valley girl is a slang term that's fairly specific to the Santa Clara Valley and the South Bay. I was surprised... I hadn't thought that it might just be a local phrase, and not a more spread out one, because I'd heard it a lot growing up. I could certainly identify a valley girl stereotype in a movie or on tv. Which of course makes me California-centric, I admit, but hey I do live here.

Well I'm not in that area, but still from So Cal. And Vally Girl is probably a recognizable term everywhere. Ever since the movie... "Vally Girl" it's been a coined term.

Don't you just love the things that become popular from our state?

Valley Girl was the name of a movie? I was thinking "Clueless" was the best example.

Most of the time, yeah. I'm kinda conceited that way. State pride. Except when Gwen Stephanie had to steal our North Cal word "hella" and make it into a radio hit song. I liked it when people who were out of town commented on that word. Now everyone probably knows what it means.

Yeah Vally Girl was made in 83 I think, yeah because my dad would make fun of me because that was the year I was born and he told me i should have been a Vally Girl. ::glares at dad:: Do I look blond? Uh no these are brown roots!... AHHH I HAVE ROOTS!!!!

.....

Ignore all of that, I really am smarter than the average vally girl.

But yeah then they did Clueless and that was basically the same movie but for the 90's.

And don't get me started on Gwen, first she steals Gavin from me, then she takes our word... damn blonds!!! ::shakes fist:: But hey I'm not bitter. ^_^

Gavin, baby, come back to me!

Oh, I'm bitter. She steals him the year I turn legal. How rotten is that? I was gonna marry him.

I quite like Valley Girl, even though its slang is nearly unintelligible to me, because it stars a VERY young Nicolas Cage as the character Randy. ("Randy Cage?! Why not just name me Horny Cage?! Or Desperate-For-A-Shag Cage?!")

As much as Cher in Clueless shrieked over even being ASSOCIATED with the Valley, I don't think of her as a Valley Girl. :D
