I went to the free concert in downtown San Jose tonight.

Arrived at Cesar Chavez right at starting time, and it was only 10 minutes or so before the opening band, Blue October, started playing. Blue October was a good band; I liked them. They have a member with an electric violin. Their songs were quite good-- a little like Dashboard Confessionals but more punk, and with better, more complex melodies. However, they lyrics were kinda lame. Compared to the complexity of lyrics in some of Eve 6's songs--using them as an example since they're the headliners tonight-- these guys are mediocre. Still, their tunes were quite good, and "Calling You", their song that's getting a lot of local radio play, is catchy.

I was standing about 20 feet from the stage when they played. During the break between bands I moved up to about 15 feet away. I also, to my great pleasure, met someone I knew. Having come to the concert by myself, this was a big relief. I saw Isaiah (spelling?), one of the boys I went to the prom with. Sweet guy, very goofy; I don't know him that well but it was well enough.

It was about half an hour wait before Eve 6 came on, but when they did, it was great. It got a lot more packed, but luckily I had retained my closer position. The drummer had these jean cut-offs that were cut about as short as possible, and no shirt-- I have no idea why. But you could see his bod nicely. This amused me to no end, and he had a yummy chest too. The leader singer Max Collins (red head), who looks more like he's 26 than 23, is surprisingly good looking person. Seriously, most of the pictures and music videos I've seen him in he just looks kind of normal... in person he has a very attractive face. I don't like the long curly/frizzy hairstyle he's currently sporting, but it didn't really detract from his hotness. Also, HELLO BODY. The arms on that boy... he was wearing a tight t-shirt and then over it a mostly-buttoned-up light blue short sleeve shirt that was too small for him. Specifically, his arm muscles bulged and so did his pecs. Which, from where I was standing, was a perfectly acceptable thing. Also, since I was had a great view of him the whole time and got his sig afterwards, I can attest that that most definitely is his natural hair color, and that he has very pretty blue eyes to match.

What did confuse me was that there were four guys on stage, and everything I've seen of Eve 6 up until this point had me convinced there were only three members. Still... I'm reading a fan site right now that says the other guitarist always plays bass with them while they're on tour... that make sense, because Collins wasn't playing, only singing.

Speaking of which, Eve 6 is a great band live. We were in a park, so it was very open and all afternoon/evening daylight, and they had a large protable speaker system set up, that might or might not be there for the entire "Music in the park" concert series that the city of San Jose is in. Anyway, it was a good venue because it never got too hot or stuffy. Though it was warm at times and after two hours you could definitely smell your fellow person's sweat.

Anyway, back to the band! THEY WERE SO COOL LIVE! The best concert that I've been too, and they were the best band I've heard live. Yes, better than Coldplay, though for different reasons. Coldplay sounded exactly like the CD, which was splendid. Eve 6 sounded a lot like their CD but also a bit different and improvised at times. And the energy. The energy was great, and the crowd was jamming the whole time, instead of just standing there singing. Every once in a while a small mosh pit would break out, but the bouncers would go in and make it stop. The first time though, after maybe song 3, it went on a good 5 minutes before any security guys came, and because it was happening right behind me it propelled me and a whole bunch of people forward about ten feet in one shove. I went from 15 feet from the stage to about 4 people away. It was fucking awesome. Loud, but awesome.

The band members were cool; they certainly looked like they were having fun and working hard too. They smiled/grinned a lot, and ecouraged the crowd, sometimes geting right in teh faces of the people in the first row; it was a low stone stage only 2 steps above ground. Collins, the lead singer, knelt down at least 3 times to sing RIGHT in front of the girls two rows ahead of me. I was still to far back to fully enjoy it, but I got a really good view all the same. The other band members were good at that too (except the drummer of course.) I got separated from Isaiah with the first big push forward, but he was having a good time too when I'd look back and see him. Me, I was bouncing and singing and screaming and clap and doing all those things you do at a really fun concert where you're 5 feet from the stage.

The best thing about it though was the song selection. They first played a song I didn't know, and then the very second song was "Promise", my favorite Eve 6 song. I was thrilled, and sang along of course. Over the next hour and a half they played old and new songs, about half of which I was very familiar with, including their best radio hits: Think Twice (currently); Leech; Here's to the Night; Inside Out (with playful mocking of it); and my 2nd favorite, On the Roof Again. About 5 songs from the end they took requests, though I'm not sure which of the ones they played were requested or not. All I know was that the very last song was On the Roof Again, the one I'd been yelling at them to play when they asked. Having the concert end with that made everything perfect--- I was completely satisfied, having been given the perfect balance of songs I knew and songs new to me.

Right before the last song I saw Stephanie LeClaire, a nice girl I went to High School with, very close to me. We met again by the t-shirt booth after the show, and briefly chatted. Her plus Isaiah being around there made me feel much better about going without anyone I knew.

I got my t-shirt, which I was all to happy to buy considering the concert was free. It's a white shirt with red baseball-jersey style sleeves and "Eve" & jersey number 6 on the back. On the front it simply says:

tie me to the bed post

Yep, that's from 'Inside Out.' It's a cool shirt. After I got it I was going to leave but I saw a crowd and realized they were doing signatures! Being as I've only gone to three concerts and have never talked to a msuic celbrity face to face before, I was elated. I got my t-shirt signed by all the band members, right underneath the lyric line on the front. Of course, they're all utterly illegible, that doesn't matter, because I met ALL of them! The drummer, by the way, is EXTREMELY hot. Woooowserrrrrrs does he have a pretty face. They should utilize him in the music videos and posters more.

All in all, I had a fantastic, rocking, kick-ass time. I totally reccomend Eve 6 as a live band. Best band I've seen in concert yet. They're just fun. And they have good t-shirts.

First of all just because you got to see Eve 6. Then because it was free, you were *four* people away from the band, they sang your song, you met the band, and how FRICKIN' cool is that shirt?! So, so jealous right now.

1. Yes, I did. It was kick-ass and everything a concert should be.

2. Yes, it was! As I said to the bassist as he signed my t-shirt, "Free concerts are the best kind of concerts."

3. They sang my song! And then they sang all my runner-up songs! And they closed with one of my songs! ::enjoys moment of blissful memory accompanied by buzzing tone of ringing still in ears::

4. I know!!!

5. They probably won't remember me since they didn't get my name.

6. Very cool. I think I'll scan it, and you can all guess whose illegible sig is whose.

7. Seriously, he looks different in person. His face in thinner than he looks in pictures, and his profile is very nice. He's handsome, whereas the drummer is pretty-boy cute. Both are yummies. The other guitarist looks a lot like Jack White, which I don't find attractive, but he was every cool and enthusiastic on stage.
