Int. Biology 10 class, Rm 35
Oct. 1st, 2003 08:39 pm SHAKA AND MICKEY ARE SITTING NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER AMONG ROWS OF OTHER STUDENTS. PROFESSOR IS AT THE FRONT OF THE CLASS, AND A LIST OF NAMES FOR THE OPTIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL STUDY CLASS IS ON THE PROJECTOR.
SHE IS TALKING ABOUT CARDS YOU CAN COME TAKE TO PRESENT TO BE ALLOWED LATE ADMISSION IF YOUR NAME ISN'T ON THE LIST.
MICKEY
Hi.
SHAKA
Hi.
MICKEY
S' are you taking that?
SHAKA
What? Oh, no.
MICKEY
Did you get a card?
SHAKA
No, I don't think I really have much extra free time, so I didn't enter my schedule inot the drawing.
MICKEY
Oh. That's too bad.
Shaka's insides turn to pancake batter.
MICKEY
I won, so I'm going to be in it.
SHAKA
Oh. Are you going to the Monday session? That's the only one I could ever make it to.
MICKEY
Yeah, me too.
SHAKA
Hhhhnnn... Well, maybe I'll go get a card.
MICKEY
You just have to show up, and you get the extra credit points too.
Shaka hears this but doesn't really hear it, because at this point she needs no convincing. 'Oh, that's too bad' was plenty convincing enough. She smiles and goes to get a card, and comes back to the desk. She hopes that they'll let her join late with the card, but is not worried. After all, if the teacher is female and should see Shaka's lab partner, she would surely understand. Shaka spends the next three hours swooning over Mickey while playing normal on the outside.

I don't think I'm overreacting here. I mean, the last time I said "Oh, that's too bad," it was because I didn't get the last peach. If I were to ever say "Oh, that's too bad" about another person, it would be deliberate.

SHAKA
So, how do you like California so far?
MICKEY
I love California. I'm never leaving.
SHAKA
You said you were in Maryland before, right?
MICKEY
I lived in Maryland for 4 years and came here last year. I mean it though; I want to live here.
SHAKA
Oh yes, yes you do. So do I. What a coincidence. In fact, you want to live here with me. We can share this dream together.
**
SHAKA
Have you ever been to Monterey?
MICKEY
No. Where is it?
Shaka draws him a map in the margin of her lab manual.
SHAKA
This is us, in the South Bay. This is Monterey Bay. You have to drive over a little mountain to get to Santa cruz, and over hear on this side in Monterey. It takes around 2 hours to get there. 1 and a half, depending on traffic. You can go in the morning and come back in the afternoon.
MICKEY
I'll have to go there sometime.
SHAKA
Oh yeah. And I'll be driving your hot body there and giving you the tour.
SHAKA
Damn, the teacher's talking about something with the microscopes magnification again. Did you draw the onion cell yet?
