Can I ask a question? I assume that your political preferences are also liberal (I hope that is correct). Considering that Arnold is liberal on social issues, which of his policies cause such concern? Just his economic policies? Are the sexual harrassment allegations an issue? I'm not meaning to start a debate on things, but I have seen a lot of concerns over Arnold on my friends list from more liberal voters and just wondered what was of the most concern to them. I'm just picking on you. I hope you don't mind, but I really am interested in knowing.

No, I don't mind at all. :)

Some of it is his economic policies. I don't think that cutting taxes or refusing to support taxes is a good thing when the state is in such a huge deficit. I'm already feeling that deficit personally (I go to community college), and seeing it in those around me. I don't think someone who states Reagan's economic policies as one of his inspirations is what I want right now.

The sexual harrassment is not an issue to me in this case. I think it makes him look like a pervy asshole, but fidelity is not something I require in a public official. Mostly it makes me feel sorry for his wife and the women he might or might not have hurt.

Well, wait, it does have one effect. It kind of makes him look stupid, the way he's handled it and the things he's said in older interviews that have cropped up in the last week. Stupidity scares me.

I don't agree with the position he's taking against driver's liscences for illegal immigrants, for one thing. I'm rather conflicted about this issue myself, but when hard pressed I fall to the liberal and pragmatic side of the fense-- they're here and we obviously aren't doing a good job of sending them back, so we're to blame for that. the ones that are here are going to drive, and I'd rather know that they have been tested for the privalege than not.

I disagree with Republicans on many fronts, even moderate ones. To me we'd not only be electing Arnold, but we'd be electing all his fellows-- some of whom AREN'T as moderate as he presents himself as. That ties into my biggest fear: executive political experience in public office. Arnold lacks it, which frightens and upsets me enough, but even worse it makes him prime puppet material for the people out there behind him that aren't as much of a "nice guy." His vagueness about issues hasn't done anything more to impress me, either. And his snubbing the other debates was uncool.

It really upsets me that he might get elected out of popularity, and half the people won't realize that they're not just electing the man, they're electing his friends, employees, coworkers, and associates, as well as sanctioning what I see as despicable behavior from the Republican Party activists.

In addition to all that, Arnold has at the forefront of the recall since it started, and the recall itself upsets me on a deeper, more patriotic level (I'd be as upset about that if it was a Republican being recalled.) I disagree so fundamentally with everything that's happening today, and Arnold stands at the forefront of that, proudly.

I don't know. I sat in my car in the parking lot of my voting place, and screamed at the top of my lungs. It didn't help as much as I had hoped. I'm scared and angry right now. This, combined with the thing the State Senatorial seats in Texas and the election of 2000 and the Supreme Court's choosing of our President and the lack of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Ashrcroft's pure existence and the Patriot Act... It's like I'm seeing my whole country getting turned into something foreign to me.

Thanks so much for answering. I'm not a CA resident, but I have a lot of interest in politics and had seen a lot of negative response to Arnold in LJ, but not a lot of people have expanded on why. Speaking only in generalities, I do tend to be socially liberal and economically conservative as Arnold purports to be, but Arnold's stance on things has been rather vague and I do understand the concern for the "men behind the curtain" who might exert influence on him. I don't agree with the recall concept either and maybe after this is over someone will start the effort to take the recall laws off the books. As long as they exist, either party can take advantage of them if it suits their needs. Thanks again. I'll be keeping my eye on the news tonight.

I'd be really surprised if we didn't come out of this experience with some kind of reform or amendment made to alter the terms of a recall (at least expand the number of sigs needed for it to get started, I'd hope.) I think if the recall fails, there will be more. If it goes through, then it's a toss up the degree to which we'll see a change, especially depending on who the new governor is.
