yeeee!! GW friend to gab to....
Date: 2003-11-10 10:33 am (UTC)Maybe. But I've also noticed that the most important character stuff about Heero (and his reasons) comes from what he says. He doesn't say a lot, so when he does it ends up having enormous significance. Macho marketing image aside, Heero defers to Relena a lot in the show-- he's not her Spike-puppy or anything, but he does defer to her often. In that conversation they have in episode 48 or 47, I don't remember, where he's going to rescue her from the ship where she's tryign to talk to Zechs... he says that she's stronger than him. While his interactions with the Gundam pilots and the enemies seem to bring out the tough person in Heero, Relena's character (often through dialogue) seems to bring out the emotional weaknesses in him. Not weaknesses in the sense that feeling is a weakness, but weaknesses as in flaws. Trowa tries to do some of that as well, but doesn't get as far as Relena does. Anyway, I'm getting way off-track. This is fun though! God, I don't have enough people to talk to GW about, not in a long time. Anyway, my point was that Heero's "macho silent tought guy protagonist" image is very strongly supported by his actions, but the dialogue, especially from him (since everyone else just talks about how cool/scary he is), reveals some of the flip sid of that. At least, that's how I interpreted it.
Which brings me to a side topic- Relena. Man, Relena-haters drive me crazy. Even if you don't like romance (I do, and feel it was directly implied more than once to be mutual), the way so many fans dismiss Relena's character just drives me up the wall, because she's so important to the themes of the series, especially Heero's character. So much of Heero's changes in the series are paralleled to and often tied to Relena's character changes, and the plot of the whole show basically centers around the two worlds that they are both the center of-- the military world, and the diplomatic world. The world of governments and the world of people. While the pilots and Zechs are changing the world of militaries, Relena's changing the world of people. And people who crow on and on about how stupid and bitchy (where do they get bitchy from? Une and Dorothy are the resident bitch characters) and in the way she is.... I feel like there's a whole section of fans who didn't even understand the show they were watching. This frustrates me.
With 'character motivations', you mean why a character is acting the way he does? Well, true, we don't know anything why Trowa's so "perfect soldier"-like either, but I say it's absolutely the same as with Heero.
Well, I usually read it that the characters past (both in "history" and in actual recent canon) explains why a character behaves the way that they do. I do think Heero's motivations are fairly well explained-- much, much more explained than Zechs or Treize, for instance. All throughout the show I *could* *not* figure out what the hell they were thinking, even from a meglomaniac standpoint.
To that sense, let me restate my statement. I understand Trowa's and Heero's motivations, but I don't understand enough of their past to understand what's made them have the motivations they have. Especially Trowa-- his acquisition of the Gundam in EW was way too weird and calculated for me; it felt like he had a plan from that moment on, but there's no indication of that in the series itself.
I just quickly looked at Trowa's story in Episode Zero, and you do see how he got tossed away from his family for safety and how he got accepted by those rebels.
-_-() Just goes to show that I should reread my manga more often...

Well, no matter how you explain of why he's acting like that ect. ect., I
still won't like the guy... heh. And I didn't get much of that flip side,
though then again, I am reminded that I still need to watch the last 2 GW
DVDs (see, in this country here they do air it on TV, but on a station
that you have to pay special money for and which I don't have)....
basically, I just don't like his attitude. ¬_¬

Hear hear... oh well, you cannot deny that the shows graced with a bunch of very good-looking bishonen, all with interesting backgrounds where you have the possibilities to interpret this and that... some people are just interested in that, and not in politics. ;)
But I must admit, even though I made an effort, I didn't understand a single word when Heero and (I think it was Treize) met and exchanged Gundams. I was like, WTF are they babbling about? And Wufei also doesn't make much sense to me when he opens his mouth, most of the time ^^; Royally confused kid, really. Still, I did make an effort to understand... and I do think the war/peace-issue very interesting.
And you're right, Relena is definitely linked with Heero... now if I'd like the guy, I might be an active supporter of 1xR ^_^
When people say they hate Relena because of her "Heero kill me"-thing (which admittedly, I had trouble understanding myself, though I think it's interesting and shows of an 'instable' and self-underapprechiating part of her character), and maybe her stubborness and such, then I understand why they do... but if they hate her for... well, I suppose you know for what other reasons, there are enough stupid ones, then it just shows that people really don't want to understand her. Oh well, nobody's forcing them. Though it is annoying to hear all these stong opinions at every piece of fanart I drew featuring Relena over and over again. *rolls eyes* I KNOW she's unpopular, you don't need to tell how you wish she'd die >< oh well, at least they don't attack me personally. That is a very good thing.

You haven't seen the END?!?! And yet you've seen EW... that's just wrong. You have to watch the last 10 episodes of the show; a lot of stuff happens!!! And there's a lot of resolution. It's not until about the last dozen or so episodes that the Gundam boys all work together as a team for the first time, something that the show has been flirting with all the way up to that point.
I can understand not liking Heero. Heck, as a person, he's pretty unlikable. I wouldn't date him. As a character to write, I think he's interesting, much more so by the end of the TV series than by the beginning. He's just so freakin' stoic he can be frustrating.
Duo's my favorite character of the Pilots. Most of the rest of the characters I like on that show are the women, especially Relena, Noin, and Une.
But I must admit, even though I made an effort, I didn't understand a single word when Heero and (I think it was Treize) met and exchanged Gundams. I was like, WTF are they babbling about?
Pretty much everything about Treize had me going "WTF?" Lady Une, now-- I loved her character. But Trieze? I didn't even understand most of what his shit was about after a while, and I think they tried to make his character into too many different things over the course of the show. Treize is my least favorite character on that series. Wufei... Wufei is the hardest pilot character for me to pin down, and I've seen him handled lots of different ways in fanfic, sometimes very poorly. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what changed between his character at the end of GW (god you *so* have to see the end!) and how he is in Endless Waltz. The "Blind Target" manga touched on it a little bit, but not enough to explain anything. When I can't figure out what's up with him, I usually just chock it up to Very!Angry!Young!Man and call that, that.
Still, I did make an effort to understand... and I do think the war/peace-issue very interesting.
I started watching this show out of order, and I was royally confused for a *long* time. Eventually I got to see it _all_ aired in order, and I was able to get a decent grasp on the overall plot events and political landscape. Still there was a lot of continuity fuzziness going on, and not everything made logical sense. But hey, that's anime for you. Not everyone is going to make a Miyazaki film. For what it aimed for, I thought the show did better than average with characters and plot, and a lot of the time I appreciated the fact that some stuff was left up to the audience to infer and not thrown in our faces. But sometimes it was too obscure. Or maybe I'm just not Japanese and am missing something in the overall picture.
Re: yeeee!! GW friend to gab to....
Date: 2003-11-11 12:49 pm (UTC)I imagine that's the core of it. I've written a few of my GW fics from Relena's POV, and they've mostly been well-received, but they've gotten the least reviews of all my GW stories. Hardly anybody reads Relena fics, despite the fact that she's a ccentral character.
>< oh well, at least they don't attack me personally. That is a very good thing.
I'm glad for that! ::huggles:: Then I wouldn't get any more H/L art from you...
And you're right, Relena is definitely linked with Heero... now if I'd like the guy, I might be an active supporter of 1xR ^_^
Well, I'm going to try to change your mind, by pointing you to the *best* GW fanfic I've read to date. I don't know if you've read it or not, but you really should check out Traitor To The Cause by
Granted, I haven't read it for a while, so I can't remember if the writing style is worth all the raving, but I remember it was good enough, and the plot/story was fantastic.
Re: yeeee!! GW friend to gab to....
Date: 2003-11-15 01:31 am (UTC)Bah, I actually find her rather cute XP
>Then I wouldn't get any more H/L art from you...
^__^ nah, even if they'd wanta kill me, there's always still the monitor between us.
>Traitor to the Cause
I think I once read that one... yeah, if you mention Heero's university friend, I think that was it. I remember now, I came across that story because the same authour also wrote a 2xR story, and I used to look for every little bit there was of that pairing. Yeah anyway, I agree, it's a really very good fanfiction, I enjoyed it too, the Black Rose is a great writer. Though it wasn't finished yet back then when I was reading it.... hmm, I dunno whether I would finish it now, I'm not that into GW anymore unfortunately.... I didn't even finish that story I recommended to you in another post in this thread myself, I didn't have time for it for awhile and then I got lost somewhere... though I should continue, it belongs to my all-time favorites... *argh* bit embarrassing for me actually.... it also contains 1xR, btw. I've nothing against 1xR, actually I find it pretty good, but I'm much of an -active- supporter of it, given my dislike her Heero and my love for 2xR *lol* oh well.
Re: yeeee!! GW friend to gab to....
Date: 2003-11-15 03:53 am (UTC)You really should. Because the payoff is great. The very last scene in the very last chapter is my favorite part of the whole thing. Though it wouldn't mean as much if you just skipped to it without all the rest of the story as build up.
I started to read the one you reccomended, but it didn't interest me that much. The narrative style didn't really capture my attention, though there wasn't anything particularly wrong with it. ::shrug::
