I think I want a PotC icon that says "Don't trust a captain who is sailing in a straight line"... but what character should I put it with? Jack hardly does anything in a straight line... he's a weavy-swishing-swirly kind of guy. But he is fairly untrustworthy. I suppose Barbarosa... or maybe Norrrington? There's a guy who would try his damnedest to sail in a straight line if he was told he should.

Yes...but in the end didn't Norrington do a little swerving of his own, giving Jack a one-day lead? You could still fit the text with Jack, the implication being that you *can*, therefore trust him. But that's not exactly what you want, is it?

Yes, but that's not until the very end. No character stays static, and the time frame is only 2 hours. But for most of those two hours Norrington was the upright straight-man. Still, you have a point.
