Go now to This Post by [livejournal.com profile] inkbug. Scroll down 3/4 of the way-- don't get stuck on the bigger-than-life-sized picture of JM, that's just there to make your brain fizzle and distract you--- down to the long-haired Hugh Jackman.

Look, long, and hard, at his expression. Look at the set of his mouth. His eyes. His nose. Ignore the hair (pretty though it may be), and look at the lines of his face.

You know what I see?

I see Roland of Gilead, in eight to ten years. I see The Gunslinger.

For a while now I've said that no one could play Roland in a film because Clint Eastwood is old and he was the only one who could have done it right...the only who had The Look.

That perfect blend of gruff attractiveness, hardness, meanness, cold-blooded killer but passionate warrior look. That obstinant, semi-insane, scary as hell but trust-inspiring look.

Now look at Hugh Jackman again. Look at that oh-so-serious expression.

He's tall, and has perfect coloring. He can wear the grit and grime and black hair and still be tough as nails. He's very muscled in the Xmen films, but if he lost some muscle-weight and went for the toned, lean, travel-wearied body... GUHHH.

He even has the same mouth shape as the picture of Roland on my icon. It's his destiny!

Any sci-fi/fantasy reader worth their salt knows that a new Dark Tower book came out in December. The next two will be out within the year. Stephen King will have brought his ka-tet to the Tower, and there will be an end.

So, to that I present a letter:

Dear Peter Jackson,

Come hither, my glorious little man.

I have a new film masterpiece for you to bring to life. It's long, but it will bring in the money. It will make your world spin. It will be the dark side of all that magic you touched in LOTR. There will be a rose, and a tower. There will be a turtle, and a bear. There will be a train, a key, and doors on a beach. There will be deserts, and fire, and a city of madness. There will be a waystation, and a book of riddles, and another of your heroes will loses fingers. There will be drugs and sex and murder. There will be demons and magic and many paths that all lead to one place, one world, one Tower.

Think about it, Mr. Jackson.

A fellow fantasy fan,

Rashaka

How would I adore to see these books brought to the screen with the same care that Peter Jackson brought LotR? I can't even count the ways.

I know. I'm not even sure if Jackson would be the right person (DT is very different from LOTR), but right now he's the only one I trust with full certaintly to adopt a fantasy novel to the big screen, and make it just right.

since you're the ONLY other person I know who's read all the books thus far

I haven't read the 5th book. My mom's reading it now, though I thoroughly intend to borrow it from her when she finishes. But I'm waiting anxiously.

Having Roland--a GUNSLINGER for God's sake!--lose his two most important FINGERS in the first couple pages of the second book? You just know when an author does shit like that that the rest of the adventure is going to be a doozy.

I know! I read that and I'm like "Wait, what? Stop: reread! Did he just lose his fingers?! Did I read that right?!!?" At first I didn't want to believe it. But now it just seems to be part of the story. In one afternoon he loses ten years and two fingers. And the boy Jake. --- I love saying it ike that, like it does in the book sometimes. Not "Jake" but "the boy Jake." ::giggle::

I loved the visual idea of a door on a beach. I just loved that. It's my favorite image from the books. But there's so many great symbols and images in these books. I named half of them in my letter-- which I think I might send indeed. :)

I also love that one, perfect line:

"Go then, there are other worlds than these."
