MMMmmmm.... So this guy is going to be Schmendrick in The Last Unicorn?!?!

And this movie is also going to have:

Christopher Lee .... King Haggard
Mia Farrow .... Molly Grue
Angela Lansbury .... Mommy Fortuna
Rene Auberjonois .... Captain Cully and voice of the Skull

I think I need a resounding "YAY!" from my fellow LJers for this. Because this sounds so frellling cool. Especially for Angela Lansbury and Christopher Lee. That's so cool.

EDIT: You know what would be really hot? If they got Paul Walker (Timeline, The Fast & the Furious) to be Prince Lear. I can imagine the ex-unicorn lady falling in love with him. Immortality has no purchase against a face like that. "Now, I do. I regret..." indeed.

I throw in a jubilant YAY! Because this better be *awesome*.

Though I can't see the link for the actor playing Schmendrick. It says I'm not allowed to view that page. Huh.

try the link again.

I was driving to get ice cream a half hour ago, and I was just remembering how much I loved the original film.

And I was just looking at the cast list of the original on imdb.com, and I just realized that Angela Lansbury and Christopher Lee WERE the voices of the characters! That explains why I said "Oh, his voice would be perfect for King Haggard!"--- because it is him! And the voice of the skull will be the same too!

Also, Mia Farrow, who will be the bandit's wife Molly Grue in the live action version (though I wonder if she's too old? Instead of the 40-ish character, the actress will be 60, which is too old to sort-of fall in love with Schmendrik like she did in the original), was the original voice of the Unicorn/Amalthia.

I'm even more delighted now. Because I think watching it with the same voices now as the actors (and good actors) will make it more familiar to me.

Wow, I'm out of the loop. I didn't know they were making a a non-animated version. I loved that movie to the point of obsession as a kid. That's great news. I like that Mia Farrow is in the cast. Kind of adds continuity.

If you look in my comment below, there's going to be a lot of continuity! And I just found out about it myself, while looking at the imdb.com page for Alexander The Great, which the guy in the picture link is also in.

You haven't seen the last unicorn?!!?

RENT! NOW!

I watched it like a hundred times as a child. It was actually a little scary when I was younger, though of course not for an adult. But the scary parts had good scary music too, so it added to tension. The film is fabulous though-- a great story with great characters and great themes. And it doesn't all end completely happily, either. It's a mixed bag instead of the traditional fairy tale.

Hmmm. I'm a big fan of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (especially in Velvet Goldmine and Bend It Like Beckam), but he seems a bit too ... er ... sexy to play Schmendrick. And not skinny enough. But I'm willing to suspend judgment until I see the finished product.

I was thinking he looked a little too pretty-faced, but I think that depends a lot on how much glamour goes into his make-up and character design. If they don't pretty him up too much, and let him look more like a normal person, then he could be alright.

me too. I would never have suspected they would make it... but now is probably the best time they could. People are high on fantasy from LOTR, and there's a built in audience of people who watched it as kids or watched it with their kids and liked it.
