I think it will be an attempted murder charge. Might just be me looking at this from someone used to the British justice system but 15 years seems a bloody long time for just burglary.

And tell your dad I'd be more than happy to help him out! :)

Maybe, but I don't think it's an unusual long time for this kind of charge. Armed burglarly is quite different from unarmed burglarly or breaking & entering, because the use of a weapon (here it was a gun), changes things. Burglarly is a felony (worse than a misdemeanor) crime, and in California law, armed burglarly is a "felony with special circumstances."
