LJ for Relatives
Jan. 29th, 2004 08:55 pmTonight on the way home from Mexican food out, I explained the whole concept of LJ to my mom. At first she didn't understand that all these journals were conencted to the same website servers, and wanted to know if there was some guy or office building somewhere that was cursing everyone for wasting all his storage space and bandwidth.
This is why I guess it is always best to start explanations from the beginning.
Anyway, I explained icons and journal styles, comments and friends lists, the great time spent on icons, degrees of privacy and general uses and purposes. I explained the stigma/etiqette that had built up around friending/unfriending people (my mom thought this was funny), and I even got as far as explaining kerfluffles. I dipped into explaining fandom_wank, as a community journal that existed once upon to mock kerfluffles in other people's journals. I explained that like in every social community, rules of etiquette have begun to develop that eventually stifled the anarchic freedom at which every community starts its existence.
My mom's final opinion was that "kerfluffle" sounded like a euphemism for farting. "Maybe that's even the sound it makes." ::makes raspberry noises::
