If there are any of you Buffy and Angel fans out there on my friends list that have a desire to try out anime, I reccomend the following titles:
-Trigun
-Cowboy Bebop
Why these two? Because Jossverse is drama and comedy and action and all forms of love and dark content and PAIN up the wazoo, where you watch characters rise and then you're made to watch them fall. And sometimes they rise again, and sometimes they don't. And all the while you're completely in love and hanging off your couch for the next eppy.
These two series are like that. Plus, Firefly fans in particular would get a kick out of _both_ of these shows... I guarantee it. Also, these are ironically two anime which I prefer to watch exclusively in the English language dub. Usually I don't care if something is subtitled or English dub, but for these two the English is actually better. Which also helps for people who are new to anime and aren't used to watching tv in Japanese.
Although neither of these shows have anything remotely to do with vampires (Trigun is semi-SciFi, semi-Western and CB is SciFi in the sense of future space travel but not supernatural at all), and both shows are significantly different from each other as well... in fact the two shows' underlying/overriding themes are so different that they might border on completley opposite to each other... in terms of character development and story style and tone and the balance of action & drama, these are two anime series that I think Jossverse fans would make the swiftest and most enjoyable transition too. I can find elements in these two series that are what I love in Angel, Firefly, and Buffy.
If that rec doesn't convince you.... ::whispers::
circe_tigana and
saava love Cowboy Bebop. I dunno if they've seen Trigun or not, but if they did they'd love that too. And Trigun has a pretty blond guy and a character named Knives, and CB has a character named Spike. And the music for both show is fabulous, with a particular plus for CB. /::end whispers::
Side note-- here's an anime torrent site; I've never used it but I'll probalby be trying it soon:

Re:
Date: 2004-02-13 10:28 am (UTC)the firefly -verse & the bebop universe are so the same place.
I'm with you right there. And seeing as there has been no real discussion of the overarching political situation in CB, it'd be completely believable to say that the Alliance/Unification thing is part of the CB world too. Ah... Mal meeting Spike. Now there's a good conversation worth reading. You up for writing it?

I personally thought that was a great idea. Not only for character aspects but because he lived in Osaka, Japan, for a time and can speak Japanese fluently. Which also mean he probably knows a lot about Japanese culture. That, to me, is an uber-plus.

However, I think Ed Norton doesn't look right for Spike. I  Ed Norton, but he doesn't have the look. Adrien Brody has the look:
here's him...

And here's him with Spike hair:

Date: 2004-02-15 07:21 pm (UTC)Ack! ::backs off:: I'm sorry, I don't mean to rip into other people's favorites, but I just really am balking right now at the comparison so I've got to stop typing before I tear your show to analytical theads. Cause that would be mean.
Anyway, uh, thanks for the comment!

Still... Call it a guilty pleasure that, for some reason, reminds me of the Jossverse every so often.
