Frank Herbert's epic Dune in Japanese?
Feb. 19th, 2004 01:24 amThe science fiction novel Dune would make a great anime series.
It already has all the elements:
space ships,
supernatural powers,
an organization of mysterious psychics,
political intrigue,
an angry youth who is destined to rule but hesitant to make the sacrifices necessary to get there,
a freaky psychic girl-child that creeps everyone else out,
planets at war,
cool technology,
people with strange eyes,
themes of destiny and philosophy and messiahs,
rival families,
giant monsters,
hand to hand fighting,
a love triangle for the hero,
... and lots of blowing shit up.
You could fit the novel into a 26-episode season. It's perfect.

Re: "I shall not fear, Fear is the mind killer
Date: 2004-02-19 02:56 am (UTC)Patlabor 2 (sold to me a a "gaint robot film" but appeared to be in fact a atunt politcal thriller)
Sailor Moon (Iknow you love this, but I found ti vaguely annoying and wanted to cry!)
Some bizzare film and a psychotic gym teacher and useless pupils whisked away to a fanatsy land.
Oh and legend of the overfiend or something.
That was a lot for one days viewing. Iw as scared I tell you! Scarred. Now where did I put Throne of Blood

Date: 2004-02-19 03:16 am (UTC)Oh have pity, man. I loved that show when I started watching it in seventh grade, and even then I thought it was silly at first. Yeah, I still love it, but it's a nostalgia kind of love, born of fond memories of something that's an acquired taste anyway. That was the first anime I ever saw. If someone had introduced it to me now, at nearly 20 and having seen so many more anime series of varying quality, then I would probably shudder and run away. But when I was thirteen I thought it was cute.

That doesn't familiar to me. Doesn't sound like one I'd like, either.
I tried to watch the Patlabor 2 movie, but I kept falling asleep.
legend of the overfiend or something.
I've heard the name... don't know anything about it.
I was scared I tell you! Scarred.
What you need is some high quality recs.
First off: Movies.
-Spirited Away (best animated film ever made)
-Princess Mononoke (in top five of best " )
-Perfect Blue (this one might scar you, but it will be literally in the bleeding and screaming for your mum way)
-Uresai Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer (it helps to know the series for this one, but it's not necessary. I didn't, and I liked it a lot)
-Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro (one of the most fun and enjoyable action/adventure caper movies you could ever see, the best of it's kind in anime. It's an old film, but it shines. Dialogue is fantastic.)
TV shows:
-Vision of Escaflowne (bestest ever)
-Cowboy Bebop (second bestest)
-Trigun (third best, and favorite to date)
-Neon Genesis Evangelion (weird but good. even more so the further you go)
-Witch Hunter Robin (slow at first, but very good and well developed, with nice art)
-Naruto (.So.friggin.cool. This one you'd have to download in subbed. Which you should. If you want to, there's a link to your left on my LJ)
-Earth Girl Arjuna (I just started this one. It's going to be good.)
-Blue Seed (kinda confusing for all the japanese mythology that might go over your head the first time, but a good ride, with a kick-ass ending)
-Gundam Wing (Like it or hate it. I like.)
-Fushigi Yuugi [Mysterious Play] (this one is kinda girly at first, but the characters are fun, the story is good and gets hella dramatic. Action/adventure/romance.)
-Ranma 1/2 (unrepentant silliness that you just can't help but love because it's so frickin' funny and worthy of your love.)
